If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. We refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. We went 2-2-1 with the picks in Week 4 and if you got a good number of two the record would have been even better. Hopefully this means we are starting to turn the corner, but the season record is 8-12-1. Let’s take a look at the Week 5 Ugly Dog picks.
Week 5 Ugly Dog Picks
Las Vegas Raiders +13 at Kansas City Chiefs
Vegas fans were excited after a hot start by the Raiders, but they have crashed back down to earth and now face the prospect of having a losing record once this game against the Chiefs is over. Kansas City looks every bit the defending Super Bowl champions and there is no reason to think they are going to slow down against the Raiders. The public is all over the Chiefs this week and the Raiders are getting nearly two touchdowns. We’ll take the Raiders as an ugly dog.
Washington Redskins +7 vs. Los Angeles Rams
We said before the season even started that we would see the Redskins in this column a lot and that has been the case. Washington is a bad team with a bad quarterback and until they wise up and bench Haskins it is going to be ugly. The Rams didn’t look that great last week, but they still found a way to win against the Giants, although they didn’t cover. We’ll hope for a similar result this week as we take the points with the Redskins as an ugly dog.
New York Jets +7 vs. Arizona Cardinals
How about a matchup between two of the worst head coaches in the NFL? There is little doubt that Adam Gase is incompetent as a head coach and there is every reason to believe that Kilff Kingsbury is not far behind. Gase and Kingsbury are supposed to be offensive gurus but neither one has an offense that is clicking right now. This has all of the looks of an ugly game where turnovers decide it. We are stuck taking the Jets on almost a weekly basis, as they look like the worst team in the NFL. At least this week we are going against a team that is also struggling. We’ll take the Jets again as an ugly dog.
Cincinnati Bengals +13 at Baltimore Ravens
The Bengals got their first win last week, but they are still in the ugly dog category this week as they take on the Ravens. We went against the Ravens last week with the rotten Redskins and you may have gotten a push if you played that game late in the week. This line may not go to 14, but the Bengals are a better team than the Redskins. At least the Bengals have some offensive talent so they might be able to get the backdoor cover. We’ll take Cincinnati as an ugly dog.
New York Giants +9.5 at Dallas Cowboys
We got a win last week with the Giants on the road at Los Angeles and this week we have them getting big points against the Cowboys. The problem we have this week is that Dallas can score points and we don’t know if the Giants have the capability to keep up. The Cowboys are really struggling, but this looks like a great spot for them to get well. This one is ugly, but that is the point, as we take the points with the Giants.
Los Angeles Chargers +7.5 at New Orleans Saints
The Chargers were supposed to be better than this, but after four weeks they are 1-3 and going nowhere. They also lost their top running back Austin Ekeler for at least the next month so there is not much to like about Los Angeles right now. The Chargers have to head into New Orleans and try and contain the Saints. That is easier than it has been in the past, as Drew Brees looks old and Michael Thomas has been hurt. We’ll take the Chargers as an ugly dog this week.
