After hitting a three-team parlay in Week 4 things didn’t go my way last week. And any excitement over a potential winning ticket was squashed early when the Bills were upset by Jacksonville in London. I even mentioned that the travel could be an issue against a team already stationed in the UK. That could have had something to do with Buffalo’s slow start. I like the Jags and think the postseason is a possibility for them, but their defense in no way reminds me of the 1985 Bears, which is why the second-highest scoring team entering the week getting shutout for the first 29 minutes was a surprise. I said it before and I’ll say it again, winning a three-team parlay isn’t easy, which is why the odds are so good. It’s no consolation but at least I didn’t have a losing week. One loss is all it takes to spoil a parlay and that was done early Sunday morning. Most sportsbooks allow for line changes in your favor and that would’ve paid off backing the Texans. I jumped on the bandwagon following two straight wins and backed Houston +2 against Atlanta. The line moved to +2.5 at some shops and the Texans were handed a 21-19 loss on a last second field goal. I thought Joe Burrow might have a big game against Arizona which is why I backed the Bengals at -3. He delivered with 317 passing yards and three TDs in Cincy’s 34-10 win giving me a 1-1-1 parlay record for the week. Let’s move ahead to Week 6.

It’s battle for first place in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars returning from a two week stay in London to host the Indianapolis Colts. The way the Jags played across the pond they should consider moving all games there. With a stellar defensive effort the Jags beat Atlanta 23-7 ending a two-game slide. Last weekend they earned the most impressive win of the year taking down Buffalo 25-20 earning payouts both times. Three takeaways helped stymie the Falcons and Trevor Lawrence had an efficient if not spectacular game going 23 of 30 for 207 yards and a TD.
On Sunday Lawrence made up for his two lost fumbles by throwing for 315 yards and a score to beat the Bills. Travis Etienne also contributed 136 rushing yards and two scores with an additional 48 receiving yards as the Jags showcased a balanced attack that we’ve seen too little of this year. The former Clemson teammates are standing out in Doug Pederson’s offense and Lawrence has a plethora of weapons in the passing game with Calvin Ridley posting 122 receiving yards last week.
It appears as though the Colts will be without Anthony Richardson for this game leaving Gardner Minshew III to get the start. He’s been good, but the Jags are stronger defensively and have a 31-21 payout victory over the Colts from Week 1. I’ll have to back the Jags minus the points on my parlay card.
The 49ers are the top team in the league through five weeks but they face the task heading east for an early game, which has been a documented trouble spot for teams out west. And they face a Browns team coming off a bye with Deshaun Watson likely back in the lineup. Cleveland lead the NFL giving up fewer than 200 yards a game and the group will keep the game close enough for the Browns to finish within spread.
There are a few reason why backing the UNDER in the Cowboys/Chargers game makes sense. The Bolts were shut out in the second half of the Raiders game after Justin Herbert injured his finger. They’ll also be without Austin Ekeler. And on defense we’ll likely see Joey Bosa and Derwin James back giving that group a boost. All signs point to this game going below the total.
