I’m becoming a huge fan of teasing lines and spreads on NFL games. For the fourth time in five weeks I hit a three-team winner putting me well up. And when you get on a heater you have to keep riding it. The idea of a teaser is to help the bettor. You buy points to help your team win the specific bet. It sounds easy enough, but it’s actually much harder than most realize. Heck, I’m totally surprised at the success I’ve enjoyed over the last few weeks. Buying points decreases the payout and just like a parlay all bets on the multi-team card have to win.
After the Colts failed me in Week 7 giving me my only loss in four weeks, I decided to go against them last week. Making the move away from Matt Ryan and handing the reins to Sam Ehlinger, I expected some tense moments. So I took the Commanders with a teased line of +9. As it turns out I didn’t need the points since the team formerly known as the Redskins won outright 17-16. The Denver-Jacksonville game was a classic example of how a tease works. I bought the total of 39.5 and teased it to 33.5 to back the OVER. A late Broncos touchdown got both of us a winner. Denver prevailed 21-17 with the total falling below the original number but over the teased total.
The final game on my three-team ticket had the Packers with a teased line of +17 over the Bills. Green Bay is going through some difficult times losing a fourth consecutive game but at least they stayed within the spread to make me a winner. The spread dropped as low as 9.5 points, so once again teasing the line turned out to be a good move. I’ll savor the moment for a short time before moving ahead to Week 9 of the NFL schedule with hopes of keeping my teaser heater going.
NFL Week 9 Betting Lines
Miami Dolphins at Chicago Bears
Opening Total: 45
Teaser Total: 39
I guess to some inside the Bears organization trading away your top defensive player after getting gouged for 442 yards and 49 points in a loss to the Cowboys makes sense. I’m not sure how, but the trade of Roquan Smith is a sign. Other moves at the deadline point to Chicago making an effort to strengthen the offense. The Bears have shown the ability to run the football and adding Chase Claypool gives Justin Fields a threat. They’re averaging 31 points in the last two games giving me confidence to back the OVER.
Following a few lackluster performances, Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami offense came to life in a 31-27 comeback win over Detroit last week. Adding Jeff Wilson gives the Fins another weapon for Tua, who looks to be recovered from the injuries that shelved him a few weeks ago. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the total spike in this game so buying now is worth it.
Las Vegas Raiders at Jacksonville Jaguars
Opening Line: Jaguars +1.5
Teaser Line: Jaguars +7.5
Teams that look very similar in their record and quarterback play should provide an environment that fosters a close game. Teasing the line in favor of the Jags hits all the major milestones crossing key numbers 3, 6 and 7. The Raiders have been a disappointment under Josh McDaniels going 2-5 and they hit bottom in last week’s shutout loss to New Orleans. Derek Carr threw for 101 yards with a pick and was replaced by Jarrett Stidham in the second half.
Every setback during a current Jags’ five-game losing streak has been by one score, so they are close. Better play from Trevor Lawrence will improve those numbers and I expect that under the tutelage of Doug Pederson. If not the Jags are strong enough defensively to handle anything Vegas throws at them. I’ll back the home team and the points on the teased line.
Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs
Opening Line: Titans +12.5
Teaser Line: Titans +18.5
I thought about backing the Chiefs but giving Tennessee 18.5-points on the teased line was tough to pass up. I can see why KC is a big favorite playing at home against a club that could be without its starting quarterback. Ryan Tannehill missed last week’s game and his backup Malik Willis struggled. However, Derrick Henry didn’t going off for 219 yards in a win over Houston.
One thing the Titans have done is play KC close winning three of the last four meetings. And the Chiefs have a hard time putting teams away at home going 2-1 SU and 0-3 ATS with no game decided by more than four points. A lot of Henry keeps the ball away from Patrick Mahomes getting the Titans a cover on the lofty teased line.
