San Francisco 49ers Regular Season Win Total

San Francisco 49ers Regular Season Win Total

It was a banner year for the San Francisco 49ers winning 13 games, taking the top seed in the NFC and advancing to the Super Bowl. However, a frustrating loss to the Chiefs is what motivates them to be among the best in the NFL in 2020. They probably won’t win 13 games this season with a first-place schedule and a tough NFC West slate of games. There wasn’t a lot of turnover on the roster and as long as Jimmy Garoppolo stays healthy the Niners are a good bet to win at least 11 games and cash the over on their projected win total.

2020 San Francisco 49ers Preview

The investment the Niners made in Garoppolo paid off last season – sort of. The 2018 campaign was a waste after he went down with a season-ending knee injury in the third game. The Niners ended with four wins hitting the jackpot with a high draft position. They also got Garoppolo back and surrounded him with a better supporting cast. As a result, the Niners went over their projected win total of eight with a Week 11 victory, finishing the season at 13-3. Garoppolo had a strong season playing all 16 games, but the Niners brandished a ferocious defense and solid ground game.

Not much changes on the roster. Garoppolo completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns and has the bulk of his pass catchers back, including George Kittle and 2019 second-round pick Deebo Samuel, who finished second to Kittle in receptions and receiving yards. The Niners averaged 237 yards through the air but finished fourth in total offense thanks to a ground game that amassed 144.1 yards per outing. They did that without having a back go for more than 772 yards. Jerick McKinnon is expected to make his regular season debut after missing the last two seasons with a knee injury.

Using their first pick of 2019 on edge Nick Bosa, the defense was drastically improved to one of the best in the NFL. They were first against the pass and second in total yards allowed while holding opponents to 19.4 points per game. Bosa had 9.0 sacks with fellow edge Arik Armstead led the club with 10.0. The unit has to get over the Super Bowl meltdown allowing the Chiefs to score three touchdowns in final 6 ½ minutes to overcome a 10-point deficit.

2020 San Francisco 49ers Schedule Analysis

For a second straight season the Niners will be showcased in primetime the maximum number of times allowed. They open at home against a Cardinals team they struggled to beat twice last year, followed by a trip to New Jersey to face the Jets and Giants in consecutive weeks. Based on last year’s results the first month doesn’t appear too extreme. Things get juicy, though, in the five games leading up to the Week 11 bye. They face the Rams, Patriots, Seahawks, Packers in a NFC Championship rematch, and the Saints in consecutive weeks with three of those on the road.

How they fare in the last three games will go a long way to determining if they surpass their win total and for supremacy in the division and conference. The Niners are at Dallas in Week 15 and Arizona in Week 16. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the NFC West come down to a final week showdown like we saw last year. This time the Niners host Seattle.

The Final Verdict

The Niners didn’t lose ground in the NFC this offseason. But did the competition do enough to make things more difficult? Last year might have been a surprise, this time the Niners are the hunted. There will be some regression, especially in a competitive division, but I think they have enough in them to win 11 games cashing the over on this bet.
