Seattle Seahawks Regular Season Win Total

Seattle Seahawks Regular Season Win Total

If we’ve learned anything over the years it’s that you shouldn’t bet against Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. The team was ripe for regression last year and all they did was win 11 games, easily exceeding their projected total of 8.5 to nearly claim the NFC West title only to lose out by less than a yard to the Niners. The Seahawks transformed from a once mighty defensive team to one that buries opponents with an electric offense. They struggled to stop teams last year with offseason moves aimed at shoring up that side of the football. Did they do enough to reach double-digit wins for the eighth time in nine seasons?

2020 Seattle Seahawks Preview

As Peter Lafleur said in the movie Dodgeball, “As long as we have Patches we’ve got a shot.” That’s exactly how Pete Carroll feels about Wilson. His ability to extend plays and create on his feet is instinctual. It was mastered by not wanting to get hammered by 300-pound men chasing him all over the field. Offense was not an issue with the Seahawks last season. Wilson was masterful again lodging one of the finest seasons of his career with 4,110 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, his third straight season with more than 30. The harassment continued, though. Wilson was sacked a league-high 48 times.

Despite Wilson throwing to top-notch receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, the run game was what propelled the Seahawks. They feed off the ground to open things up through the air. The plan worked well in 2019. Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny were a potent 1-2 punch. Carson ran for 1,230 yards and Penny added 370 in only 10 games. They were both injured late in the season forcing Marshawn Lynch out of retirement to tote the rock in the playoffs. Carlos Hyde was brought in to bolster the group just in case.

For years the defense was the talk of the town. Last season was not a good one for the guys on that side of the football, though, placing 26th in yards allowed, 27th against the pass, and 22nd in points surrendered. Investing in defenders through the draft the Seahawks got a couple of potential stars in Jordyn Brooks and Darrell Taylor with their first two picks. Quinton Dunbar was brought in to stabilize the secondary after collecting four picks last season with Washington. It remains to be seen how his offseason transgressions affect his playing status.

2020 Seattle Seahawks Schedule Analysis

If they can put things together the Seahawks are guaranteed to have success. The best home field advantage in the NFL was on display two years ago when they went 6-2 at CenturyLink Field. Last season the Hawks were road warriors boasting a 7-1 record, but went just 4-4 at home. Twice in the last three seasons they finished with a .500 home record. Getting that edge back will help them toward a division title and to double digit wins again.

They have a chance to set the tone early. After the opener in Atlanta the Seahawks have three of the next four games in the Pacific Northwest, hosting the Patriots, Cowboys and Vikings in that span. The bye comes early in Week 6, but a month later they have mini-bye with a Thursday night game followed by a Monday tilt, which should help ease things. And the Hawks enjoy primetime going 29-7-1 under Carroll. The season ends in what could be another division title showdown with the Niners, only this time it’s at Levi’s Stadium.

The Final Verdict

It’s hard to go against Wilson and the Seahawks always seem to find a way to be competitive. They’ve won at least 10 games in seven of the last eight years and reached nine the time they didn’t. The additions on defense are enough to keep them around the 10-win mark making the over the right play.
