The oddsmakers showed just how good they are with the top four teams on the list of Super Bowl LIII favorites playing in the conference championship games. The New Orleans Saints have been alone at the top for the last few weeks and they remain in that spot on the updated list at BookMaker.eu. The Saints squeaked past the defending champion Eagles on Sunday, guaranteeing a new NFL champion. And it isn’t a complete surprise to see the teams hosting the conference title games at the top. The Saints at +183 are followed closely by the Kansas City Chiefs, who have odds of +265 to win their first Super Bowl since before the AFL-NFL merger.
The Patriots haven’t been as good on the road as they’ve been at Gillette Stadium this season, and having to visit the Chiefs for the AFC title has them as a rare underdog. But don’t count out Tom Brady and what he’s accomplished over his illustrious career. Brady has more Super Bowl wins than the Saints, Rams and Chiefs have combined. And his five wins nearly equal the number of Super Bowl appearances by those three teams.
Here’s a look at the current Super Bowl LIII odds at BookMaker.eu heading into Conference Championship Sunday.
Odds To Win Super Bowl 53 at BookMaker.eu
New Orleans Saints +183
Kansas City Chiefs +265
New England Patriots +360
Los Angeles Rams +390
The top four teams on the Super Bowl odds board were all victorious on their home turf over the weekend. The Saints had the toughest game of the bunch but rallied to knock off the defending champion Eagles behind a solid performance from Drew Brees and a defense that sucked the magic out of Nick Foles. New Orleans failed to cover the 8.5-point spread, but that wasn’t the most important thing for them. They were down 14-0 before gaining a single yard on offense but rallied and held the Eagles scoreless over the final three and a half quarters.
There were some anxious moments in the Big Easy, though. A missed field goal late in the fourth would have given the Saints a nine-point cushion. Instead they had to come up with a defensive stop, and they did thanks to Alshon Jeffery. Foles was at it again and moved the Eagles into Saints territory with a few passes and a roughing the passer the penalty. But the sure-handed receiver let a ball squirt through his hands into the waiting arms of Marshon Lattimore and the party was underway on Bourbon Street.
The Rams disposed of the Cowboys by beating them at their own game. Using a devastating ground attack, LA controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball to post the franchise’s first playoff win since the 2004 season. The Rams churned out 273 yards on the ground with C.J. Anderson and Todd Gurley each amassing over 100 yards.
A loss to the Saints during the regular season has the Rams travelling on Championship Sunday. It was one of the more entertaining games of the season when the Saints dealt LA a 45-35 loss in the Superdome during Week 9. New Orleans built a 35-14 lead only to watch the Rams fight back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Brees’ fourth scoring pass of the game late in the final period supplied the final margin of victory. The Rams closed as a 2-point favorite and were favored in every game this season.
The AFC Championship is also a rematch from a regular season game that was equally as entertaining as the Rams-Saints. And it was also a battle between the quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes overcame a rough first half to bring KC back from a 24-9 halftime deficit. He tossed four scoring passes in the second half and the Chiefs took the lead, only to watch Tom Brady work his magic. Brady led the Pats on the game-winning field goal drive to hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season.
Brady was on fire against the Chargers last weekend and he got some help from Sony Michel. Brady threw for 343 yards and a score and Michel had 129 rushing yards and three scores. The Pats hit paydirt the first four times they had the football. They will be facing a Kansas City defense that stymied Andrew Luck, holding the Colts to just 263 total yards and 13 points. The much-maligned group that finished next to last in passing and total defense during the regular season has played its best football over the last two games.
