Super Bowl LVI Futures Odds

The ink isn’t even dry on the final stat sheet from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9 thumping of Kansas City in Super Bowl LV and bettors already have the opportunity to wager on next season’s NFL champion. Odds to win Super Bowl LVI, which is scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. in February 2022, surfaced with the Chiefs the betting favorite on the early line.

The Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for a second consecutive season and they’ve played in three straight AFC Championship games. Patrick Mahomes is locked up and coach Andy Reid isn’t going anywhere so there’s a good chance the mini-dynasty continues, at least that’s what the oddsmakers think. Tampa Bay saw its odds shrink after winning Super Bowl LV and with Tom Brady saying he wants to play until he’s 45 the Bucs are next on the list. With the start of the 2021 season six months out and the Super Bowl a year away, things will change. But catching favorable odds on a darkhorse now could be worth the investment.

The one common denominator with Super Bowl winning teams is strong quarterback play. There’s no denying Brady’s greatness even before he won a seventh title and fifth game MVP. Mahomes and the Chiefs didn’t have their finest game, but there’s no reason to think they won’t be contenders next season.

One chip already fell when the Los Angeles Rams swung a deal for Matthew Stafford. That deal alone saw the Rams improve their odds as the second favorite along with Green Bay among NFC clubs. And what happens with the Packers if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return? The window in New Orleans may have slammed shut following another postseason flameout and the uncertainty over Drew Brees.

There are a few NFC clubs that could sneak up on the field. The San Francisco 49ers had the best record in the conference in 2019 advancing to the Super Bowl. They were hit hard with injuries and rarely put a full team on the field last season. Those players are expected back and the Niners could easily return to the form that saw them win 13 games during the 2019 campaign. And the Arizona Cardinals might be ready to make the leap after just missing the postseason. They have a franchise quarterback in Kyler Murray and a relatively young roster that should benefit from the experience of a playoff push.

Every team in the AFC is still chasing Kansas City, but the gap is closing. Buffalo continued its ascent behind Josh Allen winning their first AFC East title since 1995 and advancing to the conference championship with 13 regular season victories, behind only the Chiefs. The Bills are a solid third on the odds board ahead of Baltimore. The next level of AFC clubs includes the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns.

Is there value for any of the four teams with 100/1 or greater odds? The Bengals showed improvement under Joe Burrow, but their season hit the skids after his season-ending injury. The Detroit Lions are in Year 23 of their rebuild and will have a new coaching staff and quarterback when the bell rings in September. Jacksonville likely lands Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick, but I don’t think he alone is enough to get the Jags from one win to a Super Bowl title.
