San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers
Pick: Chargers -10.5
Laying 10 points is never ideal in the NFL, but things can’t get much worse for the Niners, can they? Garoppolo crumbled to a quivering heap after trying to extend a play last week. And with him went any chance the Niners had of competing with the Rams in the NFC West. Jimmy G joins fellow backfield mate Jerrick McKinnon on the shelf for the remainder of the season, turning the offense over to C.J. Beathard. Kyle Shanahan and the rest of the Niners are saying all the right things about their new starter, but the bottom line is that he’s not very good.
Bobby’s grandkid struggled in a cameo role last season, throwing six interceptions and managing to produce just over 14 points per game in his five starts. And that number was helped by a 31-point effort against the equally hapless Giants in a win. The Niners will have a tough time scoring and without Richard Sherman to help defend against Philip Rivers and the Bolt’s lethal passing game, this one could get out of control in a hurry.
Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos
Pick: Under 56.5
It’s easy to see why this game has the highest total on the board for Week 4. Patrick Mahomes has been sensational with 13 touchdown passes through the first three weeks of the season and the Chiefs are scoring like an arena league team. They’re also giving up points and yards in bunches and they’ve cashed the over in each of their first three outings. The league will eventually catch up with Mahomes and we saw the Chiefs hit a wall about this time last season.
Denver doesn’t want to get in a track meet and the Broncos will turn to their powerful run game to keep the ball away from KC’s offense. And the Broncos are pretty stingy defensively, led by Von Miller and his league-high tying four sacks. The Chiefs are also expected to have Eric Berry and Ben Niemann back in the lineup, two defenders who will help certainly help on that side of the football, and the Chiefs need help because they aren’t going to outscore every opponent this season.
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots
Pick: Patriots -7
Gillette Stadium has been Miami’s house of horrors over the years and until the Dolphins beat the Pats on the road it’s hard to consider them a threat. The Fins are one of the bigger surprises in the early season with a 3-0 record and a two-game lead in the AFC East, but I don’t see that continuing this week.
After a couple of bad losses in terms of the score and their play, the Pats need a bounce back effort. And entertaining the Dolphins could be just what they need. The Pats have won nine in a row straight up against Miami at home and they’ve covered the last six with a spread no lower than six points in any of the games. Tom Brady isn’t ready to give up his throne and neither are the Pats.
