Vikings at Seahawks SNF Week 5 Betting

A quarter of the way through the 2020 NFL season and Russell Wilson is on his way to the MVP award. Wilson looks to continue his marvelous play when the undefeated Seattle Seahawks host the Minnesota Vikings in the Week 5 edition of Sunday Night Football. We all know things can change over the course of a season, but the Seahawks are off to their best start since 2013 when they capped the campaign with their first and only Super Bowl title. They’ve also been a moneymaker for backers going 4-0 ATS. The Vikings shoot for their second straight victory and first over Seattle in seven tries as a 7-point dog on the current NFL betting line.

Seattle Seahawks -7

Over/Under 57.5

Odds Analysis

The line hit the board with Seattle positioned as a 9-point favorite. With early money pouring in on the underdog the line dipped to its current -7. It looks as though the public still has faith in the Vikings after entering the win column with last week’s 31-23 win and cover against Houston. If not for a late Tennessee field goal the week before Minnesota would have a much different outlook on the season. As it was they covered the 3-point spread in that game and are 2-2 ATS for the season. The Seahawks are one of two unbeatens in the NFC after last week’s 31-23 win in Miami where they covered as a 4.5-point favorite. Seattle is 5-0 SU and ATS in the last five regular season meetings with four of those taking place in the Pacific Northwest. The current total of 57.5 is the largest in any game between the teams. The OVER is 4-2 in the last six meetings.

Matchup to Watch

Minnesota did a complete makeover of its defense during the offseason and so far the results haven’t been good. Usually a top-5 group under Mike Zimmer, the Vikings rank 29th in the NFL in total yards and passing yards allowed, and they are giving up over 31 points per game, which is over 12 points per game more than last season’s average. And those aren’t good numbers against an opponent as good as Wilson.

Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer elected to let Russ cook, and he’s been on fire leading the NFL’s second-highest scoring team. Wilson is completing over 75 percent of his passes for 1,285 yards. He leads the league with 16 touchdowns and a rating of 136.7. Wilson threw for a season-high 360 yards and two touchdowns last week, his third 300-yard game of the season, and averaged 10.6 yards per attempt. A revamped Vikings’ secondary and the absence of Anthony Barr and Danielle Hunter have opened holes on the defense that Wilson is sure to take advantage of.

Injury Report

The Seahawks will be without strong safety Jamal Adams again this week as he continues to recuperate from a groin injury. One of if not the best player at his position and an All Pro, Adams leaves a void in the defense that Kirk Cousins will try to exploit. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 315 yards and the Dolphins amassed 415 total yards last week. Seattle used a pair of first round picks to get Adams proving just how valuable he is. Adams leads the team with two sacks. Fellow defenders Jordyn Brooks and Lano Hill are questionable leaving Pete Carroll to mix and match his defense. Seattle ranks last in the NFL against the pass and total yards allowed per game.

Most of Minnesota’s significant injuries are on the defensive side as well, which is why we see the total currently the highest on the Week 5 betting board. Hunter is in danger of missing the season with a neck injury. He led the team with 14.5 sacks a season ago. Without him the team has seven sacks through four games.

Free ATS Pick

Both teams rank near the bottom in key defensive stat categories. And both teams are dealing with injuries on that side of the football. We’ve seen what Wilson can do and Cousins has the best group of playmakers he’s ever had. I’m still hesitant to back the over since 57 is up there, but it’s hard not to considering everything that’s come together for this game. The Seahawks are 4-0 with an average margin of just over eight points. Their games are close forcing me to back the visitors and the points

NFL Pick: Seahawks 37, Vikings 31
