If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. I refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. We went 1-2-1 last week to take the overall record for the season to 20-15-1. We have just three plays on this week’s NFL schedule. Let’s take a look at the Week 10 Ugly Dog picks.
Week 10 Ugly Dog Picks
Atlanta Falcons +13 at New Orleans Saints
Why is Dan Quinn still the head coach of the Falcons? That is the question that many people are asking, as the Falcons came off their bye and Quinn is still employed. Owner Arthur Blank doesn’t like to make changes and he decided against firing Quinn during the bye. Quinn did shake up his coaching staff, but whether it makes any difference is up for debate. What we do know is that the Falcons are 1-7 and in the midst of a rotten season. Atlanta still has some offensive talent, as they have Matt Ryan at quarterback and Julio Jones at receiver. They face a New Orleans team that has been one of the top teams in the NFL this season. The only positive for Atlanta is that this is a rivalry game, so they should at least be playing hard against a bitter foe. This one is ugly, but we’ll take the points with the Falcons.
Cincinnati Bengals +10 vs. Baltimore Ravens
The Bengals are the league’s only winless team and they are facing a Baltimore team that just handed the Patriots their first loss of the season. The Bengals benched Andy Dalton, so they are going with Ryan Finley at quarterback. Not many people know anything about Finley, but he really can’t be much worse than Dalton. The Bengals offensive line has been terrible, so it may not matter who is under center. The Cincinnati defense faces a very difficult task going against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. This is another rivalry game, so the Bengals should be playing hard. Whether or not it matters is the question. The Ravens could easily have a letdown after playing the Patriots so that could be another thing in our favor. This one is still really ugly, but that is the point of these plays. We’ll take the Bengals as an ugly dog.
Miami Dolphins +10.5 at Indianapolis Colts
The Dolphins finally got their first win of the season last week and they have cashed for us in two straight weeks. That does not mean they are a good team, as they beat a bad New York Jets team last week. The Dolphins are still bad on both sides of the ball, but they have played hard with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. This is not a good spot for Miami, as they are coming off their first win and they face an Indianapolis team that is coming off a last second loss. The Colts may not have starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett, but backup Brian Hoyer played well in relief last week and he is definitely capable of leading the Colts to a win against Miami. The question is whether or not the Dolphins will continue to play hard now that they have gotten a win. Most people thought the Dolphins would be tanking all season, but the last couple of weeks there has been no doubt that Miami is playing hard. The Dolphins don’t even have the worst record in the league, so a potential top draft pick doesn’t look like a certainty. The Dolphins are still in the ugly dog category and this is a really bad spot, but we will still take Miami as an ugly dog.
