If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. I refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. We went 2-1 last week to take the overall record for the season to 27-17-1. There are four games to take a look at for this week, so let’s take a look at the Week 13 Ugly Dog picks.
Week 13 Ugly Dog Picks
New York Giants +6.5 vs. Green Bay Packers
The Giants are a bad football team that has lost seven straight and now they face what should be an angry Green Bay team coming off a humiliating loss to San Francisco. This has all the makings of a big Green Bay win and the public should be all over the Packers in this one. This game definitely fits the criteria of an ugly dog and it also fits into the category of going against the public. This one is definitely ugly, but we take the points with the Giants as an ugly dog.
Washington Redskins +10 at Carolina Panthers
The Redskins got a win last week, but it was nothing to write home about, as they beat a Detroit team going nowhere. The Redskins have a quarterback in Dwayne Haskins that is not ready for the NFL and an interim head coach. They are a bad team that was fortunate to win last week and now they head into Carolina where they should get routed. The only positive in this game is that the Panthers are a mess and there are rumblings that head coach Ron Rivera is in trouble. The Panthers should still have more than enough talent to handle the Redskins, but there are questions about Carolina’s overall psyche heading into this one. I say all the time that these plays are ugly and this one is about as ugly as it gets. We’ll take Washington plus the points as an ugly dog.
Miami Dolphins +10 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
The Dolphins had their mini run that made everyone in Miami feel good, but that is long since over. Miami has now dropped two straight and they face a Philadelphia team that is really in a must-win situation. There are huge questions about the Eagles right now, especially on offense, as Carson Wentz looks terrible. You would think this would be a great week for the Eagles to get everything going in the right direction, but perhaps Philadelphia just isn’t any good and Wentz is not a franchise quarterback. The Dolphins are not a good team and playing at home doesn’t give them much of an edge, but we’ll take the big points and go with the Dolphins as an ugly dog.
Cincinnati Bengals +3.5 vs. New York Jets
The only winless team in the NFL is the Cincinnati Bengals, but they have given us two straight wins against the spread. This week they get to play a New York Jets team that is playing better of late, but this still looks like a winnable game for the Bengals. Cincinnati has switched back to Andy Dalton at quarterback for this week and he definitely gives them a better chance to win than Ryan Finley. Cincinnati still seems to be playing hard and no NFL team wants to go winless during a season, and the Bengals will see this as a game they could win. The problem for the Bengals is that the Jets are playing much better than they did earlier in the season, as New York is on a three-game winning streak. Winless teams are almost always ugly dogs, so until the Bengals win, or face another terrible team, we’ll continue to take them. We’ll take Cincinnati as an ugly dog again this week.
