If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. I refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. We knew it had to happen, as we are coming off our first losing week of the season, going 1-2 last week, but we are still 12-8 on the season. Let’s take a look at the Week 6 Ugly Dog picks.
Week 6 Ugly Dog Picks
New York Giants +16.5 at New England Patriots
There are very few people who are going to want anything to do with the Giants this week. New York is decimated by injuries right now in the backfield and at receiver. They will be down to their third string running back and they will be without their top receiver in Shepard and probably without their top tight end in Engram and now they are going to face a New England team that has the top defense in the league. The Giants are not the worst team in the NFL, but this is a bad spot against a very good team. It is ugly, but that is the point, as we take the points with New York as an ugly dog.
Cincinnati Bengals +11.5 at Baltimore Ravens
There are four winless teams in the NFL and the Bengals are one of those teams. They have a terrible offensive line, a weak defense and poor special teams. They are heading out on the road to face a Baltimore team that is in first place in the AFC North. Cincinnati does have some talented players, but because of a poor offensive line they can’t move the ball consistently. It doesn’t figure to get much better on the road against the Ravens. This is another game where the public will be all over the home team. We’ll take the winless Bengals plus the points as an ugly dog.
New York Jets +8.5 vs. Dallas Cowboys
The Jets are another of the winless teams but there is good news for New York as they are getting Sam Darnold back at quarterback. The problem for the Jets is that they are heading into Dallas to face a Cowboys team that is coming off two straight losses and facing serious heat. This is an all or nothing game for the Cowboys if they are to save their season. This is simply a must-win game for Dallas at home against a winless New York team. How many times have teams failed to win must-win games? It seems to happen all the time. This is still ugly, as the Jets are winless, so we’ll take the points.
Pittsburgh Steelers +6.5 at Los Angeles Chargers
I never thought we would have the Steelers in this column this season, but Pittsburgh is 1-4 and going nowhere. Not only do the Steelers have four losses, they are down to their third-string quarterback. The Steelers lost Ben Roethlisberger weeks ago and now they will be without backup Mason Rudolph this week. Pittsburgh is starting some kid named Devlin Hodges that very few people have even heard of. The Steelers do have some talent on both sides of the ball, but so far they have found ways to lose games. If they don’t turn it around soon there is a chance this will be the last season for Mike Tomlin as head coach. The good news for us is that the Steelers go against the Chargers and as we said last week, Los Angeles is unreliable as a favorite. The Chargers couldn’t even beat the Broncos last week, but most people won’t want to bet on the Steelers with a third-string quarterback under center. We’ll take the points with the Steelers as an ugly dog.
