Brown has definitely caused hard feelings among players in Pittsburgh and Steelers president Art Rooney II said recently that he can’t see Brown being with the Steelers when they open up training camp in July. Brown has yet to give much information on what led him to basically walk out on his team late in the season. Brown did say recently on Twitter that he will be doing an interview soon to explain everything.
49ers Favored
The 49ers are the current betting favorite to land Brown, but that is only because Brown had a conversation with former 49ers All-Pro receiver Jerry Rice. Brown has said he would like to join the 49ers and many San Francisco players are lobbying for Brown to join their team. The only problem with the 49ers being the favorite to land Brown is that the Steelers are in total control of where Brown goes. Rooney said that the Steelers will not release Brown, but all other options are open. If the 49ers really want Brown then they would almost assuredly have to offer the Steelers their first round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, No. 2 overall.
Brown is really pushing hard to be traded to the 49ers, as he has taken the word “Steelers” out of his Twitter profile. He has also planning workouts with Rice. "He's talking about running the hill with me, doing all that, and just working out, you know, just picking my brain," Rice said to the media, "I don't know if it's going to happen because it's going to be up to Kyle Shanahan and also John Lynch, but you know, I'm all for it, if they want him to come on board."
Are the Steelers an Option?
While all indications are that Brown could be done in Pittsburgh it is important to keep a couple of things in mind. First, the Steelers are not going to cut Brown. That is simply not an option, as he would cost the Steelers more than $21 million on their cap if they simply cut him. The only option for Pittsburgh is to trade him. Can they find a team willing to take on Brown’s big contract? Let’s look at the other teams on the odds list besides the 49ers.
Other Teams
If a team is going to trade with the Steelers for Brown they need at least two things? First, they need cap space, and second, they need to have a high draft pick to entice the Steelers. The 49ers have that. The Jets also have a high draft pick. The Raiders have multiple high draft picks and the Cardinals will also have a high draft pick. The Raiders might have the most value of any of the teams in terms of their odds, simply because they hold so many first round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. There is not as much value on a team like Miami, Dallas or Indianapolis.
The field would be an appealing bet if the odds were higher. A team could come out of nowhere and make a pitch to the Steelers for Brown. We have seen time and time again in the NFL that trades happen that were completely unexpected.
