Germany have a chance to tie the United States as the most successful team in World Cup history by winning this year’s competition, and they have been given an excellent draw. They have been placed in the much easier side of the bracket for the knockout rounds, avoiding the US, France, and England before a potential match in the final. Now, it’s up to the Germans to take advantage of the favorable road ahead starting with Sweden in the last quarterfinal on Saturday.

Odds Analysis
The Swedes are not as strong as they once were, and they are the biggest underdog in this round. Sweden have had some trouble scoring in France. They weren’t able to break through against Chile until late in a 2-0 win, and a 5-1 victory over Thailand doesn’t mean much as Thailand were the weakest team in the tournament. Sweden were shut out by the Americans in their final game of the Group Stage, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as it gave them a better draw.
Their match against Canada was seen as a relative toss-up, and it played out like one. The great opportunities were few and far between, but Sweden managed to escape with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Stina Blackstenius in the 55th minute.
Germany have not lost a match in over a year, and they have an unblemished record at this World Cup. That doesn’t mean they have looked great though. Germany easily could have settled for a draw or worse against China in their opener, and Spain flustered them too. The Germans won both games by a score of 1-0 and were unable to get a high-powered offense going.
They have looked much better in their two most recent matches but neither opponent was great. Germany hammered South Africa 4-0 in their final game of the group stage and beat Nigeria 3-0 in the Round of 16, but Sweden will be a tougher test.
Sweden Player to Watch
The hero of the day for Sweden against Canada was goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl. The 36-year-old is taking part in her last World Cup and she is making the most of it. There might not be a better goalkeeper in the world when it comes to stopping penalties. She came up big for Chelsea in a penalty shootout earlier this year, and Lindahl made a phenomenal save on a penalty kick against Canada to preserve the win for Sweden. I haven’t seen a goalkeeper get the full extension that she can on an attempt, and she gives the Swedes a great chance if the game goes to penalties.
Germany Player to Watch
Dzsenifer Marozsan looks set to return for Germany and just in the nick of time. Marozsan was injured against China in the first match, and she has been sidelined with a broken toe since that game. Germany have said that she has been cleared to play and will start against Sweden on Saturday, giving the team it’s most creative midfielder once more. Marozsan was voted the best player in Ligue 1 for her play at Olympique Lyon last year, and she makes Germany much more dangerous on the attack.

The Swedes haven’t done enough on offense for me to have faith in them here. I love Lindahl, and I think she will make a couple big stops, but Germany are going to be too much over the course of 90 minutes.
