The Netherlands are the only team of the four countries remaining at the World Cup that has never made it to the semifinals of this tournament prior to this year. The United States’ pedigree is well-established, and England made the semifinals in 2015. Sweden boast a pair of third place finishes to their credit on this stage, making the Dutch the debutantes. However, while they are new to the World Cup Semifinals, they are not new to winning major international titles and are favored to advance to the World Cup Final over Sweden on Wednesday.

Odds Analysis
Sweden is the only longshot left at this World Cup. The Swedes were considered a solid team that would exit either in the Round of 16 or the Quarterfinals, but they have overcome the expectations and the odds to make it back to the World Cup Semifinals.
They finished in second place in a group that included the United States, Thailand, and Chile, losing to the former opponent while beating the latter two. In the Round of 16, they were considered a relative coinflip going into their match with Australia, and won a pretty evenly contested match 1-0 thanks to a massive penalty stop from Hedvig Lindahl.
The Swedes were the biggest underdogs in the Quarterfinals, but they were the only underdogs to get a win after beating Germany 2-1. Lindahl had some big stops once again in that match, and Sweden overcame an early deficit by surprisingly carving up Germany’s back line. There is a little bit of bad news for Sweden after the win though. Midfielder Fridolina Rolfo picked up a yellow card against Germany and is subsequently suspended for this match.
The Netherlands have improved significantly over the past four seasons. They first qualified for the Women’s World Cup in 2015, and now they are out to win their first Women’s World Cup after winning the Euros in 2017.
It was a slow start for the Dutch in France, as they needed injury time to beat New Zealand and second half goals to beat their other two Group Stage foes to claim Group E. The Round of 16 was a continuation of that, as the Netherlands edged Japan 2-1 with Lieke Martens sliding home a penalty kick in the 90th minute to five the Dutch the win.
They put together their best performance of this tournament against Italy. The Netherlands needed a while to score, but they slowly wore down Italy with their possession and waves of attackers. Vivianne Miedema notched the go-ahead goal and Stefanie van der Gragt added another 10 minutes later to seal a 2-0 win for the Dutch.
Sweden Player to Watch
Stina Blackstenius had an incredible game against Germany. The Swedish forward has been a domestic star for Linkopings, and she made an impact from the start against the Germans. Blackstenius netted the go-ahead goal for Sweden three minutes into the second half, and she constantly applied pressure on Germany’s exposed back line. Her presence was constantly felt on the pitch, and Sweden need a similar performance from Blackstenius here.
Netherlands Player to Watch
Martens has had a very good World Cup for the Netherlands, even though opponents are constantly trying to throw her off her game. Martens was named FIFA Player of the Year back in 2017, and her smooth plays in the midfield have made the Oranje one of the most fun teams to watch in France.

These teams met in the 2017 Euro Quarterfinals, with the Netherlands winning 2-0 on the strength of goals from Martens and Miedema. Those two players will be decisive once more to send the Dutch into the finals.
