Rising Stars Challenge
The Rising Stars Challenge is one of the more popular events and has been a staple of All-Star Weekend since 1994. We have seen many forms of the Rising Stars Challenge over the years. When the game was first played it was known as the Rookie Challenge. For the first five years of its existence this game pitted rookies against one another, but the 1999 lockout led to a change in the format. Since rookies couldn’t play in that 1999 game, the 2000 Rising Stars Challenge featured rookies taking on second-year players, and the NBA largely kept that format for two decades.
Rising Stars Format
A total of 28 players are selected, 21 NBA rookies and sophomores, and 7 NBA G League players. The NBA rookies and sophomores will be coached by the trio of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin who were well known Golden State players in their career and the teams will be named after the players. The G League team will be coached by Jeremy Lin, who began his career with the Golden State Warriors. The winning team of the Rising Stars Challenge will earn a spot to play in the 2025 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, February 16. This new format provides an exciting opportunity for young players to showcase their talents on a larger stage.
