2025 Starry 3-Point Contest Participants
Damian Lillard (Milwaukee Bucks): The two-time defending champion will be looking to win his third consecutive title, a feat previously achieved only by Larry Bird and Craig Hodges.
Buddy Hield (Golden State Warriors): The 2020 champion is back to take a shot at dethroning Lillard. Hield now represents the Warriors, as he looks to win his 2nd title.
Tyler Herro (Miami Heat): Herro is averaging 9.7 three-point attempts per game and hitting 39.3%. Herro is definitely a contender and deserving of respect in 3-point odds.
Darius Garland (Cleveland Cavaliers): Perhaps being overlooked in the NBA betting odds is Garland. He has a career-best 42.9% from three-point range this season.
Norman Powell (Los Angeles Clippers): Another player who should be getting more attention is Powell. He leads all participants with a 43.1% three-point shooting percentage.
Cam Johnson (Brooklyn Nets): It would be a surprise if Johnson won this contest, but he is averaging a personal-best average of 19.3 points per game this season.
Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks): This will be the second straight year for Brunson in the contest. He will be looking for redemption after an early exit in 2024. He's shooting 39.7% from 3-point range this season.
Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons): The longshot in this contest is Cunningham. He will be a first-time participant and he is shooting 35.4% from three-point range this season.
2022 MTN DEW 3-Point Contest Preview
Luke Kennard might end up being the favorite to win the NBA Three-Point Contest. He currently ranks sixth in the NBA in three-point shooting percentage, knocking down 43.4% of his treys this season. Kennard is a career 41.9% three-point shooter, but fatigue might be a factor as his 297 three-point attempts this season are by far the most he has had in his five-year career.
The sharp pick might be Patty Mills. The Brooklyn guard ranked in the top ten in three-point percentage and three-pointers made a week ago. Mills hasn’t made more than a third of his triples in any of his last five games, but he is still knocking down 41.8% of his looks from the perimeter on the year.
Since there are no Cleveland players participating in this competition, Zach LaVine and Trae Young will probably receive the bulk of the fan support. LaVine is making 39.9% of his threes this season, but he has been dealing with left knee soreness and will sit out Chicago’s last game before the All-Star Game. That puts his status in doubt for this competition.
Young is expected to make it rain though. He is only a 37.8% three-point shooter, but he has limitless range and is a high-volume scorer. We saw Young take part in the 2020 Three-Point Contest, yet he finished in last place with just 15 points in the first round.
C.J. McCollum might be considered a sneaky pick to win this contest. McCollum was long one of the NBA’s most feared three-point shooters in Portland, but he has struggled from beyond the arc this season. He went 0-5 from beyond the arc against Memphis on Tuesday night though.
The Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane has had a breakout season. He is making 41.3% of his treys for Memphis, and that has helped this team be one of the best teams in the NBA at the All-Star Break. Bane isn’t a big name yet, but he could be with a memorable performance on Saturday night.
Fred VanVleet is also dealing with a knee issue. Toronto’s guard is questionable to play in the Raptors’ last game before the All-Star Break, and that’s a shame since he is knocking down 43.6% of his triples in his last 10 games.
The longshot to win the Three-Point Contest is clearly Karl-Anthony Towns. The 6’11 center has great range for a big man, but his delivery takes a lot longer than the guards taking part in this competition because of his size. That will put him at a relative disadvantage.
2025 Starry 3-Point Contest Format
According to NBA.com, eight players will compete in the two-round, timed shooting competition. Ball racks are positioned at five main shooting locations around the three-point arc. Four of the racks contain four official NBA game balls and one multi-colored “money” ball. The NBA game balls are worth one point. The multi-colored “money” ball is worth two points. For each rack, the multi-colored “money” ball can only be shot after the four orange balls are shot. The fifth rack will be a special “all money ball” rack.
Each competitor will decide the spot for this rack to be placed at one of the five main shooting locations. Every ball on this rack is worth two points. Two ball pedestals are positioned at “STARRY Range”( 2 deep shot locations between racks 2 and 3 and the other between racks 3 and 4. Each ball pedestal holds one special white “STARRY” ball. Shots made with the white ball are worth 3 points. Players must exhaust the ball racks and pedestals in competition order before moving on to the next spot. Players may not start on or over the three-point line while shooting. The basket will not count if the line is violated. For the two additional deep shots, the player must begin their shooting motion with at least one foot in “STARRY Range” designated by a floor decal. If a player shoots a money ball or STARRY Ball out of sequence, that shot becomes void and will not count. If a player skips a “STARRY Ball” and shoots one or more balls in the next rack, that “STARRY Ball” is eliminated and will not count if subsequently shot and made.
Each competitor has 70 seconds (1:10) to shoot as many of the 27 balls as he can and the three players with the highest scores advance to the Championship Round. The competition order for the Final Round will be determined by the inverse order of First Round scores. (e.g., the player with the lowest score in the First Round among the players who advanced shoots first in the Final Round.)
