The NBA Draft dates all the way back to 1947, but things changed dramatically in 1985 when the draft order went from based on finishing order in the standings to the lottery. The Knicks won the first ever draft lottery, one that most conspiracy theorists believe the NBA ensured that they would win in order to get Patrick Ewing on their roster. Since that point, we've seen teams with the worst record in the NBA get the first pick in the draft, and we've seen plenty of teams with virtually no Ping-Pong balls get that top slot. You just flat out never know what's going to happen on lottery night, and that can shape franchises positively and negatively for a decade to come. There have been some recent changes to the odds because tanking became a huge issue.

You just flat out never know what's going to happen on lottery night, and that can shape franchises positively and negatively for a decade to come. There have been some recent changes to the odds because tanking became a huge issue. Now, the teams with the three worst records in the NBA have equal odds at the top pick, which helped curb the tanking in 2018-19. It also helped the Pelicans jump up and secure the No. 1 overall choice.
The 76ers have had the No. 1 pick in consecutive seasons in 2016 and 2017, a part of "The Process" to go from the worst team in the NBA to a contender over a long stretch of time. This is two times in five years that the same team has drafted first overall. Cleveland did the same thing when it took Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett in consecutive years with the top pick in 2013 and 2014. The Phoenix Suns had the first pick in 2018 and grabbed center Deandra Ayton. It remains to be seen if that was the right pick, or if Luka Doncic or Trae Young turn out to be better players.

The franchise now known as the Washington Wizards holds the most No. 1 overall picks in the NBA Draft with seven, but only two have come since they took over the Washington name, Kwame Brown and John Wall. The Cavaliers are just behind with six No. 1 overall picks, including a couple guys you might have heard of before in LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.
Two franchises which no longer exist, the Providence Steamrollers and Pittsburgh Ironmen, took the No. 1 overall pick three times. It's almost amazing that eight franchises have never had the top pick in the NBA Draft. It's not shocking that the Charlotte Hornets, the newest NBA franchise, have never picked No. 1 overall. But to think that Denver, Indiana, Memphis, Miami, Oklahoma City, and Utah have never selected first is almost astounding.
