America East Conference NCAA Tournament Betting
It’s been a wild year in the America East. COVID wreaked havoc on the conference schedule at the start of the new year, forcing teams to play three times a week in order to complete the slate. Last year’s America East title game opponents Hartford and UMass Lowell were hit particularly hard and will have to play a make-up game on Thursday, March 3, after they had two games suspended. That means we won’t know the full bracket for the America East tournament until that game is played.
Stony Brook was banned from playing in the conference tournament early last month after the Seawolves announced that they would be heading to the Colonial Athletic Association next season. It’s a tough blow for the players as the Seawolves are probably the second-best team in the conference, but at least it makes the bracket easier as the conference moves from nine teams to eight teams as a result of the move.
As usual, Vermont is the team to beat in the America East. The Catamounts went 17-1 in conference play this year, and their lone loss was by one point in overtime on the road against Hartford. Ryan Davis and Ben Shungu were the two best players for the Catamounts, and both players averaged at least 15 PPG while hitting 40% of their threes. Isaiah Powell is an inside presence to be reckoned with and also led Vermont in assists.
Only two other teams that will take part in the conference tournament finished the regular season with a winning record. UMBC went 16-13 this season, and New Hampshire finished the year 15-12.
America East Tournament Format
The omission of Stony Brook makes the America East conference tournament much more compact than what we saw last year. This tournament will take place on campus sites starting with the quarterfinals on Sunday, March 6. The semifinals will be played on Wednesday, March 9, and the America East is a conference that reseeds after the quarterfinals, potentially making things even easier for No. 1 seed Vermont. The America East Championship Game will be held on Saturday, March 12.

The America East has been one of the conferences that saw its membership change in a major way when realignment got underway. In fact, seven of the all-time winners of the America East Tournament aren't in the conference any longer, including both Northeastern and Boston U, which combined to win 13 titles all-time in this conference.
Northeastern had the best run in the history of the America East Tournament, winning it six times in seven years from 1981 through 1987. The Huskies’ last win came against Maine in 1991, but then they fell off until leaving the conference for the CAA in 2005. Stony Brook will leave for the CAA at the end of 2022, while Hartford will drop to Division III after this year.
Vermont is now the team to beat in this conference. The Catamounts tied Northeastern’s record seven titles with their win over UMBC in 2019. All their titles have come since 2003 when the school won three straight America East championships.
UMBC was the first and only No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2018. The Retrievers hammered Virginia 74-54 in the biggest upset in tournament history, ensuring they will be the answer to a trivia question for decades to come.
