Atlantic Sun Conference NCAA Tournament Betting
The Liberty Flames might become the first team in Atlantic Sun history to win the conference tournament four straight times. Liberty is one of the favorites entering this year’s ASUN Tournament, as they finished atop the East Division with a 12-4 record. Jacksonville State had the best record in the conference though, while the Jacksonville Dolphins finished the year 14-0 at home.
Liberty is one of the most efficient teams on offense this season. The Flames rank ninth in effective field goal percentage at 56.5%, and they are an excellent perimeter shooting team. This squad is making 39.4% of its treys with the six leading scorers all making at least 38.3% of their threes. Reigning ASUN Player of the Year Darius McGhee is the star for Liberty with 24.7 PPG. The Flames are not good on defense though, and they struggle to get rebounds at times.
Jacksonville State finished the season as the best team in the conference. The Gamecocks dropped six of their first 11 games, but they showed they could hang against quality opponents with close losses to Wichita State and Alabama. They won 15 of their last 18 games to close out the regular season, and that was despite getting unlucky with opponents making an absurd percentage of their free throws. Jalen Gibbs and Demaree King are two of the best three-point shooters in the nation.
We’ve seen a much different Jacksonville team at home versus away. The Dolphins have yet to lose at home this season despite playing in an arena with just 1,500 fans. That has JU looking to win its first ASUN Championship, as the program that made the national title game in 1970 has fallen a long way over the last five decades. Jacksonville plays at a snail’s pace, but they limit rebounds and defend the perimeter ferociously.
The Bellarmine Knights have proven they belong in Division I. Bellarmine went 10-3 in conference play last season after making the jump from Division II, and the Knights were one of the top teams in the ASUN once again this year. They played a murderer’s row to start the season with games against Purdue, Murray State, St. Mary’s, Gonzaga, and UCLA in the first two weeks, but they have built off that trial by fire.
Atlantic Sun Tournament Format
All 12 ASUN teams will take part in this year’s conference tournament. Every game will be on campus with the first round slated to take place on March 1. The third- and fourth-placed teams in the East Division will face the sixth- and fifth-placed teams in the West Division and vice versa with the top teams in the West.
The top two teams in each division (Liberty and Jacksonville in the East; Jacksonville State and Bellarmine in the West) will host a quarterfinal game on campus on March 3. The winners of those games will square off in the semifinals on March 5, and the ASUN champion will be crowned on Tuesday, March 8 with the game starting at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Atlantic Sun Conference was originally known as the Trans America Athletic Conference. It was founded in 1979 with an entirely different collection of teams than the schools we see in the Atlantic Sun today.
The original members were Oklahoma City, University of Texas-Pan American, Northeast Louisiana, Houston Baptist, Hardin-Simmons, Centenary, Samford, and Mercer. Those last two schools were the last original schools to leave, while the first six schools left by the end of the 20th Century. Samford left in 2003, while Mercer left in 2014.
Stetson is the longest tenured current member of the conference, having joined in 1985. Unfortunately, the Hatters have yet to win the Atlantic Sun Tournament, although they have made the A-Sun Championship Game three times in their history.
Belmont was the most successful school in Atlantic Sun history with five conference championships in seven seasons between 2006 and 2012. The Bruins’ dominance led to them joining another conference after their last A-Sun title, paving the way for current heavyweights Florida Gulf Coast, Liberty, and Lipscomb.
FGCU put the Atlantic Sun on the map with their first conference championship in 2013. The Eagles famously upset No. 2 Georgetown as a No. 15 seed and then knocked off No. 7 San Diego State to make it to the Sweet 16 as Dunk City swept the nation for a week.
Lipscomb has been to the last three conference championship games. The Bisons beat FGCU in the highest scoring A-Sun Championship Game ever in 2018 with a 108-96 win. However, they fell short against Liberty in each of the last two seasons.
