The Big 12 Conference has been the best conference in college basketball this season. The Baylor Bears are the defending national champions after routing Gonzaga in the title game last year, and they are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. Kansas is a half-game behind Baylor in the conference standings and is ranked No. 6, while Texas Tech is a half-game behind the Jayhawks while being ranked No. 12. There’s no doubt that four of the ten Big 12 teams will get in the NCAA Tournament, but we could see up to seven teams from this conference in March Madness.

Baylor lost most of its top players after winning its first basketball national championship last season. The Bears were expected to take a step back, but instead they started the season with 15 straight wins. They knocked off VCU, Michigan State, Villanova, and Oregon in non-conference play, and all of those wins came by at least eight points. Baylor split with Kansas this season, but the Bears lost both their games against Texas Tech, so they can’t afford to slip up against Iowa State in Waco in the season finale if they want to earn the No. 1 seed.

Kansas has been the juggernaut in the Big 12 for a long time, so this is something of an unfamiliar spot for the Jayhawks. They have nice wins over Michigan State, North Texas, Iona, and St. John’s in non-conference play, but they are clearly a step behind Baylor. The Jayhawks have lost their last two games ahead of Thursday’s tilt with TCU, and they need a win in that game to stay in contention for the top seed in the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

The worst team in the Big 12 this season is West Virginia. The Mountaineers are 3-14 in conference play, but even they have nice wins out of conference. They hammered Pittsburgh, and they also defeated Clemson, UAB, and Connecticut. That tells you just how tough it will be to win this conference tournament, as there are no easy games against Big 12 foes this year.

Big 12 Tournament Format

Oklahoma State is ineligible for the postseason this year, so there will only be nine teams taking part in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. That means the No. 8 seed will face West Virginia in the first round on Wednesday, March 9. The winner of that game will advance to the quarterfinals the following day to take on the No. 1 seed, and all the quarterfinals will take place on Thursday, March 10. On Friday, March 11, the semifinals will take place starting at 6 p.m. ET, and the Big 12 Championship Game will be held on Saturday, March 12, at 5 p.m. ET.

Since 2010, Kansas City has been the site of the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Every game will be played at the T-Mobile Center.

Most Wins All-Time in Big 12 Tournament

Kansas has been far and away the best basketball team in the Big 12 since its creation. The Jayhawks have won nearly half of the Big 12 Conference Tournaments that have been contested, picking up the slack for their moribund football program. Roy Williams and Bill Self have both had a ton of success in Lawrence, and the Jayhawks are 11-3 in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Iowa State is currently 5-0 in the Big 12 Tournament Championship Game. The Cyclones have yet to lose at this point, and they have claimed four of the last seven titles. On the other end of the spectrum is Texas. The Longhorns are 1-6 in the Big 12 Tournament Championship Game, and they needed a little bit of luck to get their first conference tournament win in 2021.

The Big 12 will see its membership change next year. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF will join the conference to ease the blow of Oklahoma and Texas leaving for the football money in the SEC. BYU, Cincinnati, and Houston have all had success in basketball, so that will help the Big 12 retain its power conference status.
