What will make this season special for Creighton is getting one last ride out of Kalkbrenner, who has undoubtedly established himself as one of the program’s most memorable players of all time. He is such a special player that you can count on him to score, rebound, and block with insane efficiency figures. While there’s less experience than ever around and behind him in the frontcourt, he alone is a nightmare for opposing offenses and defenses.

We’re thinking specifically about this upcoming season, though it’ll be interesting to think about the Bluejays in the future. They added a slew of new faces to this lineup, meaning there are real chances for immediate contributions from some of these freshmen. Fans should temper immediate expectations, but don’t be shocked to see a few of them earning regular roles.

You could argue that Creighton has had one of the nation’s best starting fives in recent years, and their Tournament success proves that talent is assembled in Omaha. Many of those names have come and gone, with two new transfers joining this starting five. Despite those changes and the challenges of replacing Scheierman and other departed stars, has Creighton built another lethal starting rotation?

Isaacs has the chance to be really special; it’s something that many expected in his second year at Texas Tech. He did take a measured step forward as a sophomore and now has a chance to do all of that and more with the Bluejays. When you throw in Neal, who himself really stood out last season, you can argue that there’s plenty of talent here to compete at the national level.

Basketball has been tough in the Big East in recent years, and Creighton is one of the bigger reasons for that success. While they don’t have the national success as Connecticut or Villanova, their decade-plus since joining the Big East has been very prosperous, with Greg McDermott building quite the basketball program in Omaha.

The Bluejays have been in each of the four NCAA Tournaments since the beginning of the pandemic, including three trips beyond the opening weekend. A program that’s finished Top 4 in the Big East in eight straight seasons, Creighton was back in the Sweet Sixteen again last season, surviving a tough battle with Oregon in the second round before falling to Tennessee to end the year. That tough loss came on year after an even harder defeat to San Diego State in the final moments of the Elite Eight.

Creighton has come up just shy of that breakthrough success in recent years, though the focus is certainly on the future. They’ve established themselves and proved they belong in the Big East, but could the tides be changing in this league? There’s a long list of talented players and coaches in this conference, and it’ll be harder than ever for the Bluejays, though they’ve shown no signs of backing down during this recent run of success.

The roster looks different than that Elite Eight run in 2023 or even from last season, but there’s still a lot to like about this squad in Omaha. We’re going to dive into the current makeup of the roster, look a bit at the season’s schedule, and try to gleam what we can about where Creighton could be headed this season. A fifth straight trip to the Big Dance is certainly an initial goal, but can these Bluejays make it an even more special season than that?

Big East play begins just a few days later with a very winnable road trip to Georgetown before a pair of home games. The Bluejays play every team in their league twice but could get off to a hot start with that schedule. The first major challenge is a trip to Marquette on January 3rd.
