Since winning the 2022 national championship, head coach Bill Self and his Kansas Jayhawks have floundered. KU has not advanced past the round of 32 for the past three seasons and is coming off its second consecutive 11+ loss season. Perhaps there is an element of karma involved for Self and Kansas escaping some potentially incriminating FBI tapes several years ago. Now, in the era of NIL and the transfer portal, there are no rules, and everyone can “cheat.” Kansas fans are increasingly concerned that Self can’t keep up with the times.

2025 Kansas Jayhawks Season Recap

Overall, the Kansas Jayhawks are 21-12 straight up, 15-16 against the spread, and 10-21 over/under the total. Kansas has national metrics of 115th for scoring offense, 60th for field goal percentage, 110th for 3-point field goal percentage, 222nd for free throw percentage, and 44th for offensive rebounding. While defensively, Kansas is 94th for scoring defense, 15th for field goal percentage permitted, 44th for 3-point field goal percentage allowed, and 225th for defensive rebounding.

Lately, Kansas has covered two of its previous six games and gone over the total in five of its last six outings. First among Kansas scorers is Hunter Dickinson, with 17.4 per game.

Jonas Aidoo nearly quadrupled his scoring average with a game-high 22 points, and 10th-seeded Arkansas canned eight straight foul shots in the final minute to clinch a 79-72 win over 7th-seeded Kansas in a first-round West Region game of the NCAA Tournament in Providence, R.I.

Johnell Davis added 18, including two free throws with 10.4 seconds left for a 77-72 advantage. D.J. Wagner scored 14 points and dished out six assists, while Trevor Brazile chipped in an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double. The Jayhawks went one-and-done after starting the season as the No. 1 team in the country.

Zeke Mayo scored 18 points to lead Kansas, while AJ Storr came off the bench to add 15. KJ Adams hit for 13 points and Hunter Dickinson contributed 11 points, although he was held to 4 of 13 shooting.

The Jayhawks owned a 67-64 edge with 4:55 left after Adams canned a jumper but committed six turnovers in a 3 1/2-minute span. Arkansas took the lead for good on two foul shots by Aidoo with 2:14 remaining and salted the game away at the line.

The game matched two storied programs that finished with lower seeds than some might have predicted for them in October, given the star power on the floor and the sidelines. In stark contrast to the second half rock fight, the first half was free-flowing and high-scoring.

Aidoo couldn’t be stopped by any defensive scheme Kansas tried, going 8 of 13 from the field on his way to 16 points. Meanwhile, Mayo had a perfect half, ringing up 13 points on just four shot attempts. He made all three of his 3-pointers and canned both foul shots.

Aidoo capped his big half with a jump hook in the lane, followed by a Wagner floater with 48 seconds left that helped Arkansas take a 47-44 edge to the locker room.

Despite having a third consecutive tournament appearance end before the Sweet 16 since Kansas' last national title in 2022, Self doesn't believe the Jayhawks are in decline.

“We’ve got to reevaluate on how we do things, and you can’t afford misses," Self said. “In today’s time, there’s going to be schools that do a great job, but still, there’s an element of luck involved, I think more now than there was even before.”

Kansas forward KJ Adams limped off the court with 3:10 to play with what Self said is an apparent Achilles tendon injury. Adams had 13 points and four rebounds.

“We’re hoping for the best. I’m not sure it’s going to be great news, though,” Self said. “It’s one thing to lose the game, but to see him potentially lose a year on top of the game, you know, that’s a pretty big blow.”
