Penny Hardaway has had a successful run coaching his alma mater and hometown team, the Memphis Tigers. This year, the Tigers were a bubble team that did not seriously contend for the American Athletic Conference race. Memphis had a vastly different roster from last year and was never able to generate a full-court game. While its offense was good, the Tigers’ defense was among the worst in the land. Memphis finished a disappointing 5th in the American and was bounced by Wichita State in its first AAC Tournament game.

Memphis Tigers Team Review

Overall, the Memphis Tigers are 22-9 straight up, 12-19 against the spread, and 18-12 over/under the total. Memphis has national metrics of 31st for scoring offense, 83rd for field goal percentage, 108th for 3-point field goal percentage, 151st for free throw percentage, and 99th for offensive rebounding. While defensively, Memphis is 290th for scoring defense, 110th for field goal percentage permitted, 211th for 3-point field goal percentage allowed, and 248th for defensive rebounding.

Late on, Memphis has covered four of its previous six games. Memphis has gone under the total in four of its last six outings. First among Memphis scorers is F David Jones, with 21.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. F Nae’Qwan Tomlin averages 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest.

Fans and gamblers were asking if this is the year Penny Hardaway gets Memphis basketball over the hump? The Tigers have made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. But not since 2009 have they advanced beyond the round of 32.

In an effort to change that, the sixth-year Memphis coach grabbed the transfer portal by the horns. He scored big wins, landing the likes of Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly, St. John's do-it-all dynamo David Jones, and Louisiana center Jordan Brown - the reigning Lou Henson Award winner. He accentuated the marquee names with strong complementary additions, such as versatile Temple forward Nick Jourdain and UCF backup point guard Jayhlon Young.

Memphis Basketball was looking to make another run under head coach Penny Hardaway with an entirely different squad from last season. After going 26-9 and winning the AAC Conference Tournament, things could be promising for the Tigers, but they had 12 new faces in the rotation to deal with this season.

With just one player returning from last year’s squad, Memphis had an entirely different look in 2023-24. They had eight new faces out of the transfer portal and four freshmen a year after Penny Hardaway posted his best winning percentage (.743) as the head coach of the Tigers.
