Mountain West Conference NCAA Tournament Betting
There has been a changing of the guard in the Mountain West Conference. Utah State and San Diego State met in the previous three conference championship games, but the Aggies are below .500 in MWC play this season while the Aztecs are currently tied with Wyoming for third place in the league. Instead, Boise State and Colorado State are the two top teams in the MWC, and the Broncos and Rams both are likely to earn at-large berths in the NCAA Tournament if they are unable to earn the automatic bid next week.
Boise State is 15-2 in conference play and 24-6 overall this season. The Broncos are the 27th best team in the country according to Ken Pomeroy, as they have overcome a 3-4 start to win 21 of their last 23 games. They are 5-2 against Quad 1 teams and 6-3 against Quad 2 teams, and the only awful loss on the slate was early in the year against CSU Bakersfield. Boise State ranks 16th in defensive efficiency, and the Broncos have three good perimeter shooters in Marcus Shaver Jr., Emmanuel Akot, and Tyson Degenhart.
The Colorado State Rams have not won the MWC Tournament in almost two decades. Colorado State has been strong this year though with a 10-0 non-conference record and a 13-4 MWC mark. The non-conference slate wasn’t a joke either as their wins came against teams like Bradley, Creighton, Mississippi State, and St. Mary’s, and none of their losses were particularly bad. David Roddy is the star of the Rams with 19.4 PPG and 7.7 RPG while making over 57% of his field goals and 47% of his threes.
Wyoming and San Diego State are probably on the outside looking in at the bubble. The Cowboys are 23-7 overall, but their best non-conference win was against Northern Iowa.
Defeats to Stanford and New Mexico put their March Madness hopes in jeopardy, as do losses in four of their last six games. As for the Aztecs, they have a better chance as they have a strong pedigree coupled with a big non-conference win over St. Mary’s.
Mountain West Tournament Format
The MWC Tournament will once again take on an unusual format as there are still just 11 teams in the conference after the departure of Hawaii. The bottom six teams will play in the first round, and New Mexico, Air Force, and San Jose State are locked into the bottom three slots. The winners of those games will advance to the quarterfinals to take on the top five seeds including No. 1 Boise State.
The 2022 MWC Tournament will take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Paradise, Nevada from Wednesday, March 9, to Saturday, March 12. The MWC Championship Game will be held on Saturday, March 12, at 3 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Mountain West formed in 1999 with seven of the eight original members breaking away from the Western Athletic Conference. The first basketball tournament was held in 2000 and 10 teams have won a title, including a different school each year from 2014 to 2019. Prior to that, the New Mexico Lobos captured a record three straight titles, a mark that won't be matched for at least a few more years, if not a heck of a lot longer.
Eight of the MWC’s current 11 league members have at least one title. The three schools never to have won – Boise State, Air Force and San Jose State – have never even appeared in a title game.
Despite the league’s youth there have been some Cinderella-like runs in the dance. Nevada advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2018 even though the Wolf Pack didn’t play in the conference tournament title game. San Diego State made it to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2011. The Aztecs won their record sixth tournament title in 2021 and extended their record number of appearances to 13 last year.
