Southern Conference NCAA Tournament Betting
The chalk has held up in the Southern Conference Tournament for each of the last seven years. The regular season conference champion went on to grab the SoCon’s automatic bid in each of the last seven seasons, so No. 1 seed Chattanooga is at a tremendous advantage coming into this year’s competition. The Mocs went 14-4 in conference play and 24-7 overall in a stronger than usual SoCon, as this conference was ranked 12th nationally according to Ken Pomeroy.
Chattanooga deposed VCU and Middle Tennessee in non-conference play. The Mocs were led by Malachi Smith, and he will likely be named the SoCon Player of the Year in a few weeks. Smith averaged 20.3 PPG and 6.6 RPG for Chattanooga, and he also made 51% of his field goals and 41.2% of his threes this season. This team had one of the top offenses in the conference, ranking 62nd nationally in offensive efficiency per Pomeroy.
Furman has one of the best offenses in the country. The Paladins used that offense to knock off Louisville and Appalachian State in non-conference play, and they nearly defeated Mississippi State in Starkville too. They rank 20th in offensive efficiency and 12th in effective field goal percentage, as Alex Hunter and Conley Garrison are superb three-point shooters. Jalen Slawson is a great all-around player with 14.6 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 3.9 APG as a forward for Furman.
Wofford has won the conference tournament five times since 2010, but the Terriers only managed to go 10-8 in conference this season. B.J. Mack is a lights out shooter, yet there isn’t much else to be excited about on this team.

Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, Alabama, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Mississippi State… What happened here? It's almost like the SoCon used to be the compilation of the SEC and the ACC, and that isn't far off. It's when those conferences were created that the SoCon became more of a "mid-major" than anything else. Of course, Stephen Curry challenged that moniker when he led Davidson to the Elite Eight in 2008.
The Wildcats still hold the record for the most SoCon championships all-time with 12 titles before leaving for the Atlantic 10. West Virginia, North Carolina, N.C. State, and Duke have all won this league at least five times too, and those teams have long since been a part of other conferences as well. Among active teams, Chattanooga holds the record for the most league titles with 11, though it should be noted that all five of Wofford's titles have come since 2010 in one of the better runs in the recent history of this conference. The Terriers have carried the conference banner well in recent years, and they earned a No. 7 seed in 2019.
The best run in the history of the SoCon will probably never be matched. West Virginia went on a ridiculous tear of six straight and eight out of nine SoCon Tournament titles from 1955 through 1963, and the Mountaineers won the regular season title in eight of those nine years as well. N.C. State also won six straight SoCon championships from 1947 through 1952.
