2018-19 Wichita State Shockers Betting
Wichita State is not a Johnny-come-lately in the world of college basketball. The Shockers have had spurts where they have been one of the top teams in the country throughout their program’s history. This is a proud school that has reached the Final Four twice in its history, and Gregg Marshall has brought them the sustained success they have been after for years.

The Shockers’ 1964-65 campaign was a season of firsts. Wichita State had slowly been building something special under Ralph Miller and Gary Thompson took the school to the next level. In Thompson’s first season in charge, he led the Shockers to their first-ever No. 1 ranking in the polls, their second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, and their first-ever Final Four. It was a banner season for the school, but it took them a while before they had postseason success once more.
Wichita State’s second deep run at the NCAA Tournament happened in 1981. That year, the Shockers were led by Cliff Levingston and Antoine Carr, and the duo took the team to the Elite Eight with wins over Southern, Iowa, and Kansas. They lost to No. 1 seed LSU in the Elite Eight, and they had three other NCAA Tournament appearances later in the decade, but they couldn’t pick up victories.
Marshall has solidified the foundation of this program during his time on campus. Whereas, they had just occasional successes before he arrived, the Shockers have had some great seasons this decade. They have made it to seven straight NCAA Tournaments, and they went all the way to the Final Four in 2013 before losing a heartbreaker to Louisville.

Last season did not go as planned for Wichita State. The Shockers were a near-consensus pick to finish in the top ten prior to the start of the season, but this team just seemed to be missing something. They had a veteran, experienced team used to playing together, yet they seemed to fall apart at times and Marshall has to make sure that doesn’t happen again this year.
Markis McDuffie is the leading returning scorer for the Shockers. He averaged 8.5 PPG as a junior last year, and he is hoping for a healthy senior campaign. McDuffie dealt with a foot injury for most of the season, so he should be better now that he has had all offseason to recover.
Samajae Haynes-Jones will be the go-to guy in the backcourt. He saw action in 24 games last season after transferring in from a junior college, and he will be asked to take on a much bigger role. He sunk 44 percent of his threes in limited action, so we know he can shoot from distance.
There are a slew of young freshmen on this team, so Marshall will have some coaching to do. This feels like a rebuilding season to be sure, but you can never totally count this team out.
