Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz Jr.

The fact is that Andy Ruiz faces understandably long odds in this one. Ruiz was the third choice as an opponent to Joshua in this fight. Joshua should not expect much of a threat.

Unification Heavyweight Title

This heavyweight unification title bout has been a hassle to put together. Last December it was planned that Joshua would fight Dillan Whyte. But Whyte pulled out due to what he called a “lowball” offer. There was also haggling over the location. Even after Whyte got a better offer the matchup fell through.

In February an agreement was reached for Joshua to meet Jarrel Miller on June 1 at Madison Square Garden. Interest was high and it was the highest-grossing pre-sale in the history of MSG for a boxing match. However, Miller tested positive for a banned substance and the fight was off. The problem was that 17,000 tickets had already been sold, and 10,000 of those were from Britain.

After the Miller fight fell through, Andy Ruiz Jr. stated that he wanted a shot at Joshua. Finally, on May 1, the fight was announced. Ruiz will get $7 million to serve as the massive underdog to Joshua with coverage on DAZN.

Ruiz is currently ranked 14th in the world. He is 29 years old and is a native of Imperial, California where he still resides. Also known as “destroyer” Ruiz stands at six feet, two inches tall with a reach of 74 inches. Ruiz has won his last three consecutive bouts.

Last time out Ruiz scored an RTD win over Alexander Dimitrenko on April 20. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds and ended in the fifth. The bout took place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Anthony Joshua is also known as “AJ.” He is ranked number one in the world as the unification heavyweight champion. Joshua is a native of Waterford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom where he still resides. The champ last stepped into the ring on September 22, 2018, against Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium in Wembley. Joshua scored a technical knockout win in the seventh round as Povetkin went down twice in the seventh round.

Since winning the title International Boxing Federation heavyweight title belt in a technical knockout against Charles Martin on April 9, 2016, Joshua has won six consecutive title defense bouts. He has won four consecutive unification championship fights.
