Alvarez had said previously that he wouldn’t face another Mexican fighter after he defeated Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. in May of 2017, but he changed his mind. “I know I had said that I wouldn’t fight against another Mexican fighter,” Alvarez said during a press conference. “But someone respectful like Munguia, who earned this chance fight after fight, giving it his all, it’s something that I’m glad that we were able to make happen. And I hope that, you know, everybody can see how this is gonna be great for everybody involved and for Mexico in particular.”
Munguia said to the media that he is thankful for this chance. “I feel great. I am really happy to have this opportunity. It's the perfect chance to show the world who I really am. I am so glad to be a part of this fight and a part of this event. I don't see it as Canelo and me dividing or separating Mexico. I think we are bringing people together. They are going to enjoy a great fight.”
