Boxing Betting Lines: Sergio Kovalev has spent the mass majority of his career fighting in the United States, but the light heavyweight champ is going to be heading back to his homeland in Russia to fight for just the third time on Monday, July 11 against heavy underdog Isaac Chilemba. The fight will take place at the DIVS Palace of Sports in Ekaterinburg in a fight to be shown live on Showtime.
Kovalev (29-0-1) has been rather spotless in his career, and he's been on a knockout tear of late. He took care of Jean Pascal and Nadjib Mohammedi via TKOs in 2015, and he kicked off 2016 by beating Pascal a second time, this time after the Canadian retired after the seventh round. The Russian has a whopping 26 knockouts in his career in his 30 fights.
Kovalev must win this fight in order for a mega fight with the also undefeated Andre Ward to happen. Both men are fighting interim bouts before meeting in November in Las Vegas, but both must win those fights, or either one can cancel their big bout.
Chilemba isn't exactly a stiff in the light heavyweight division. He was beaten by mixed decision against Eleider Alvarez in his most recent fight last November in Quebec, a bout many believe he fairly won. Prior to that, the South African had won four fights in a row, taking care of Vasily Lepikhin, Cory Cummings, Denis Grachev and Michael Gbenga all with relative ease.
This fight is scheduled for 12 rounds, though most suspect it'll be over with Chilemba on his back by the time this one reaches the seventh or eighth rounds. Should Chilemba make it the distance, even if he loses, it should be considered a triumph by his camp.
