A seemingly cursed matchup has led to the most hastily assembled superfight in UFC history. For the fourth time in four years, MMA fans have been deprived for a matchup between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. I don’t know what we’ve done to displease the MMA gods so much, but at this point it’s just cruel of how many times they insist on playing this joke on us.
But the silver lining here is that we get a superfight. Granted, a lot of us are probably still too salty to really appreciate it, but Max Holloway moving up in weight to meet Khabib is a killer matchup that under any other circumstances would have been hyped to the moon and back.
What’s more, the lightweight title is up for grabs. Ferguson is being stripped of the interim belt, and the undisputed strap will be there for the taking. Holloway gets a chance to become just the second simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history, while Khabib could very well become the lightweight kingpin many expected him to be.
In the co-main, Rose Namajunas will defend her strawweight strap for the first time in an immediate rematch against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. “Thug” Rose pulled off the 2017 Upset of the Year when she starched J-Check at UFC 217, but there are still many who see the win as a fluke.

What to Watch For
Holloway is in one of the toughest win-win situations we’ve ever seen. Win or lose, he walks away the featherweight champion, earns the admiration of fans for taking on such a big challenge and could even earn legendary status. But on the other hand, he’s got to face a bigger guy who is absolutely mauling dudes - on six days notice. Fittingly, oddsmakers have Khabib as a massive -528 favorite, with Holloway at +382 on the comeback.
How will Joanna Ex-Champion bounce back from her first career loss? It seemed like she had bought into her own hype, trash talking Namajunas to obnoxious levels. That all came crashing down when Rose beat her at her own game. All of a sudden, J-Check’s aura invincibility was shattered. The closest comparison is Ronda Rousey, who was brutally exposed by Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. It’d be shocking to see Joanna follow the same path.
UFC 223 also marks the return of “Raging” Al Iaquinta, the lightweight division’s biggest hothead. He’s a punishing boxer matched up with gritty fighter in Paul Felder, but the real reason to watch any Iaquinta fight is to see what he’ll say on the mic in his post-fight speech. From cussing out a booing crowd or seething over the UFC brass, Iaquinta is always good for some brutally honest hot takes.
Strawweight Felice Herrig was once written off as a mid-tier divisional fighter, but a four-fight win streak - including two upsets of previously undefeated prospects - has earned her the biggest matchup of her career. “Lil’ Bulldog” meets former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and could make an argument for a title shot with a win.
