Amanda Nunes is ready to make her third consecutive title defense, and she’ll do it from of a home crowd. “The Lioness” will meet Raquel “Rocky” Pennington in the main event of UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, carrying the torch for Brazil in its biggest city.
We all know who Nunes is by now: she’s the division’s most explosive striker, a true knockout artist and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. But who is Raquel Pennington? The 29-year old Colorado Springs native has quietly put together four straight wins, most recently beating Miesha Tate at UFC 205. She sat out all of 2017, making the title challenge her first fight over a year.
Also on the card is a legends matchup between middleweights Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida, and a high-stakes contender scrap in the same division with Ronaldo Souza and Kelvin Gastelum. Top five light heavyweights Glover Teixeira and Volkan Oezdemir will get down as well.

What to Watch For
There is already a lot of speculation for this card, from the main event on down. After Cyborg’s dominating performance against Yana Kunitskaya (surprising no one), Dana White admitted that he’d prefer for Cyborg to meet Amanda Nunes for this main event. The champion vs. champion fight might be the biggest women’s MMA match to make right now.
But pump the brakes a bit: Cyborg came out and stated that she’s already fought three times in the past seven months and would like a break. Since White can’t force fighters to fight, it’s looking likely that Nunes will meet Pennington after all.
Teixeira vs. Oezdemir is a late addition to the card, but it’s an awesome matchup between two bone-crushers. Oezdemir is coming off a failed title bid against Daniel Cormier - the Swiss kickboxer got trucked - but he took out some killers on the way there. Teixeira is one of the toughest “old guard” light heavyweights in the division, and he can test Oezdemir in every phase.
In a likely title eliminator, Kelvin Gastelum and Ronaldo Souza will meet to cement a shot at the Whittaker-Romero winner. Gastelum is a young hotshot and a big puncher, while Souza has been consistently one of the best 185-pounders in the business.
The Machida vs. Belfort scrap is a legends matchup that would fit right in place under the Bellator banner. Both guys are around 40 years old, way past their primes, but still carry plenty of recognition as former champions.
