Two championship fights have been booked for UFC 225 in Chicago on June 9, setting up one of the better pay-per-view cards for the year.

In the main event, middleweight champion Robert Whittaker defends his strap in a rematch against Yoel Romero, who knocked out Luke Rockhold to earn the challenge. The first time they met, Whittaker outboxed the dangerous Romero for five rounds to claim the interim belt. The young Aussie was later installed as the undisputed champ after GSP vacated the belt.

As we all know, Romero is one of the most explosive athletes to ever grace the octagon, and any moment he’s on his feet is one where he could author a brutal finish. But Bobby Knuckles has become a stellar tactician, and his superb boxing has become a problem that contenders can’t solve.

In the co-main, Rafael dos Anjos will meet Colby Covington for the interim welterweight title. Covington has been making plenty of headlines, doing a poor impression of Chael Sonnen to trash talk his way into big fights. It’s working, but he’s quickly become the most hated fighter on roster. His recent statements about Brazil should give Rafael dos Anjos plenty of motivation to shut up Covington.

Also on the card is bantamweight No. 1 contender Joe Benavidez, two-time strawweight title challenger Claudia Gadelha, heavyweight title challenger Alistair Overeem, former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski and former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans. Just to top it all off, CM Punk will fight in his hometown for his second pro MMA bout.

What to Watch For

Robert Whittaker will make his first title defense against the guy he beat to win the title. While he’s the big favorite coming in, counting out somebody as dangerous as Romero is just plain stupid. Keep your eyes on Romero’s price, as approaching anywhere close to +200 would be an excellent opportunity.

We don’t know if Covington will have a single person rooting for him after he’s been doing everything humanly possible to become the UFC’s most despicable person. But hey, if fans tune in to watch him lose, he’s doing something right. Covington proved that he belongs in the title mix by taking out Demian Maia, but Rafael dos Anjos is a whole different animal on the feet. If Covington can’t take him down, he’ll get tuned up.

Alistair Overeem went through the Uppercut From Hell, and now he meets one of the division’s fastest-rising prospects in Curtis Blaydes. The 27-year old Blaydes was already a great wrestler, but his striking will be tested by one of the most prolific heavyweight strikers ever to do MMA. Getting through Overeem is a rite of passage for any big man looking to become a contender, but also a huge risk for any young fighter.

Claudia Gadelha was long considered the second best fighter at 115 pounds, with a gap separating her and Joanna Jedrzejczyk from the rest of the pack. However, she got brutalized by Jessica Andrade, and all of a sudden the Brazilian looks vulnerable. If she can’t beat Carla Esparza she might have to reset at 125 pounds.

Tai Tuivasa is another heavyweight prospect, 9-0 with nine KOs. He’s been feasting on lesser competition, but now he meets Andrei Arlvoski, who won’t take likely to being a stepping stone. But a 100% KO ratio does not bode well for The Pitbull, who has an infamously glass chin.
