UFC 227: Dillashaw vs. Garbrandt II
UFC 227 takes place on Saturday, August 4th, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw (15-3 7 KOs, 3 SUBs) will defend his title in an immediate rematch with rival Cody Garbrandt (11-1, 9 KOs) in the main event. The main card airs live on pay-per-view starting 10 p.m. ET following the FS1 prelims. Bet on UFC odds and get the latest previews, predictions and picks here.
One of the most realest rivalries in MMA will get a second go-round. Bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw, who KO’d former teammate Cody Garbrandt to seize the strap at UFC 217, will once again meet the brash “No Love” for his first title defense. This will be T.J.’s second attempt at establishing a title reign, as he previously held the hardware after dethroning Renan Barao in 2015, only to lose it one fight later against Dominick Cruz.
Garbrandt tormented T.J. in every step of the pre-fight buildup, and had to be separated from him several times when they were coaches on The Ultimate Fighter. That’s par for the course from the 26-year old, who totally has that aggressive gym bro mentality. Love it or hate it, you have to admit that it makes for good television. Plus, T.J.’s contentious split from Team Alpha Male was a real source of drama, which Garbrandt took personally.
In their first fight, Garbrandt knocked T.J. down with sledgehammer punches, only to see his former teammate rally in the second and floor him with a head kick. Because the fight was so short, it’s tough to really know who’d have the upper hand in the rematch. Let’s just say this is wide open.
Also on the card (which is still being filled out) is Brazilian strawweight prospect Polyana Viana, bantamweight prospect Ricard Ramos, China’s Wuliji Buren, Bethe Correia and a crackerjack featherweight scrap between Cub Swanson and Renato Carneiro.

What to Watch For
There’s a ton of buzz in MMA forums about the title rematch. This is about as even a match as it gets, and oddsmakers seem to agree. Dillashaw opened as a slight favorite at -135 with Garbrandt at -105 on the comeback, though slight movement as brought Cody’s line down to +100. Cody appeared to be in control in Round 1, flexing and styling on T.J., but the quick adjustments during the break let Dillashaw score the finish.
Brazilian featherweight Renato Carneiro is flying under the radar as a future championship contender, having beaten Jeremy Stephens, stopping Calvin Kattar’s 10-fight winning streak and going three hard rounds with No. 1 contender Brian Ortega before getting caught with a sub. He now gets a matchup with Cub Swanson, who has long been the guy you beat to get to the guy with the tite. Given how talented they both are at striking, there should be a ton of fireworks in this matchup.
Women’s strawweight is getting yet another blue chip prospect. 25-year old Polyana Viana is coming off a successful UFC debut, and now meets JJ Aldrich for the encore. At 10-1 with 10 finishes, Viana has the look and skills to become a contender in the near future. She has no lack of confidence, already aiming for the pack leaders in Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Rose Namajunas. We’ll see how she does against a mid-card fighter like Aldrich.
22-year old Ricardo Ramos is another Brazilian prospect, with a 2-0 UFC record at 22 years old. His last fight ended with a spectacular spinning back elbow, and he’s also got six submissions on his 11-1 record. It’s always fun to see guys grow up inside the octagon, from Sage Northcutt to Dustin Poirier. Ramos locks horns with South Korea’s Kyung Ho Kang, an action fighter with an all-or-nothing style.
