UFC 240 Holloway vs. Edgar Betting

UFC 240 takes place on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The main card airs live on pay-per-view starting 10pm ET.

Frankie Edgar is getting another shot at facing Max Holloway. Originally scheduled to challenge the Hawaiian for the title at UFC 222 last March, Edgar lost his opportunity when he elected to face Brian Ortega on short notice instead of waiting for Blessed. To make things worse, Edgar was launched airborne and knocked out for the first time by one of the most vicious uppercuts in UFC history.

The fight world - fans and fighters included - were quick to praise Edgar’s guts. Everybody from Conor Mcgregor to Holloway all lauded The Answer’s warrior mentality. The former lightweight champ had nothing to gain and everything to lose by putting his title shot on the line against the then-undefeated Ortega. This also came at a time where T-City was slaughtering everybody put in front of him too.

Fortunately for Edgar, it only took a rebound win against Cub Swanson (taken on short notice just a month later) and a year of waiting on the sidelines to get his second title shot at 145 pounds. For some, the opportunity never comes again. The matchup will be Edgar’s second attempt at capturing the featherweight title and becoming the seventh fighter in the promotion’s history to win belts in different weight classes.

Holloway will be fighting three months after losing to Dustin Poirier in a lightweight title challenge. The defeat snapped a 13-fight winning streak and was his first loss since 2013. It also was an eye-opener for many fans, as Holloway looked small next to Dustin, putting the brakes on his hopes of dominating 155 in the same fashion as featherweight.

In the co-main event, the aforementioned Brian Ortega meets Zabit Magomedsharipov in a prove-it match for the Dagestani uber prospect. It’s time to see if Zabit is a legit title contender - and he could earn the next shot with a win.

What to Watch For

Obviously, we’re all eager to see how Holloway bounces back. This matchup was a lot more interesting back when it was first scheduled - before Holloway thrashed Ortega in his finest UFC performance to date. Against Poirier, the Hawaiian simply could not sustain the prolonged offensive barrages he’s become known for, disrupted by Dustin’s power shots.

Edgar is a small featherweight, so he won’t be able to bully Holloway. That’s probably the basis for the lopsided opening odds from online sportsbooks, setting Holloway as a -425 favorite, with Edgar at +320 on the comeback. I think almost everybody is expecting the Hawaiian to get right back to wrecking everybody in his natural weight class.

But the New Jersey native is an elite boxer/wrestler and arguably the most well-rounded featherweight that Holloway has faced to date. Edgar’s footwork and timing are elite, and watching him trying to outsmart Holloway is going to be on MMA at its highest level.

Brian Ortega against Zabit Magomedsharipov is not only a top contender matchup, it’ll be a rockin’ good time. Zabit is an absolute wildman in the cage, willing to throw anything and everything on the feet or on the mat. Ortega is a killer with his fists and can notch submissions as quickly as one-punch knockouts. This is an easy pick for Fight of the Night.
