UFC 249: Ferguson vs. Gaethje Odds
So Dana White couldn’t make April 18 happen, nor could he avoid the fifth cancellation of Khabib vs. Tony. But he’s got a new target for UFC 249: May 9 - and the promotion is stacking its chips as the first live major sporting event since the Covid19 outbreak.
Headlining the UFC’s return to action is Tony Ferguson. But instead of fighting the undefeated Russian for the lightweight title, he’ll be fighting Justin Gaethje for the interim title. Reminder: El Cucuy already won the interim title when he beat Kevin Lee in 2017. He never really lost it, but everybody just forgot about it when Khabib won the “official” title a year later.
So Ferguson could be the first two-time interim champion, which is kind of hilarious when you think about it. At this point, it’s fair to question why he doesn’t just wait for Khabib to get back inside the octagon - that fight would be the year’s biggest - but we can’t fault a dude for wanting to get paid.
Besides, it’s got to be one of the most entertaining fights we can think of. Justin Gaethje put on three straight Fight of the Year nominees to start his UFC career, and Tony’s high-risk, high-octane style is like watching the human equivalent of a honey badger. Winner gets Khabib, and both guys make equally compelling opponents for the lineal champ.
The UFC odds at BookMaker opened with Ferguson as a -170 favorite, with Gaethje at +150 on the comeback. We’ve got a lot of thoughts about that one, especially since The Highlight can put together a much better training camp, but we’ll save it for the betting preview.
Bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo was originally scheduled to make his first title defense against Jose Aldo, but the Brazilian got stuck overseas due to Covid19. Dominick Cruz steps up to take Aldo’s place. Long regarded as the best champion in divisional history, Cruz hasn’t fought since 2016. Three and a half years is a long time to be away and jump right into a championship fight - but he’s still one of the most recognizable fighters in the division.
Expect to see a bunch of thinkpieces about Cejudo’s cringiness leading up to the fight. Ever since winning the belt, it’s been cheesy promo reel after lame tweet after dumb quote. But for the most part, it’s been harmless and has achieved the desired result of people talking about Triple C. For what it’s worth, it’s been a lot easier to handle than Covington’s brash persona.
Online oddsmakers opened with Cejudo as a big -250 favorite, making Cruz around a 2-1 underdog. Not surprised: Cruz is now 34 years old and we’ve lost count of how many times he’s undergone major reconstructive surgery. Jairzinho Rozenstruik is trying to become the new Francis Ngannou. Beating Ngannou would pretty much seal that deal. Rozenstruik is 10-0 and has won all four of his UFC fights by knockout. There’s always room for killshot big men, but beating The Predator would thrust the Suriname native into the title picture. That’s not something that he’s ready for, but nobody fighter is going to turn down a big money fight.
