UFC 255: Figueiredo vs. Perez

Date: Saturday, November 21, 2020

Venue: UFC Apex

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

It took two tries against Joe Benavidez, but Deiveson Figueiredo is the undisputed flyweight champion of the UFC. And both times, he was an absolute monster in scoring brutal knockouts (the first didn’t net him the hardware since he weighed in heavy). Reminder: Benavidez has been one of the division’s top-3 guys for years and “Daico” outclassed him, twice. With Mighty Mouse and Triple C out of the picture, Figueiredo could fill a big hole left behind by two of the best in the world.

The 32-year old certainly looks the part. He’s a massive flyweight, with serious knockout power and a powerful submission game. There’s simply no place where he can’t end a fight. He’s only lost once in 20 pro fights, putting together the type of dominance that makes you wonder how he’d do against Cejudo or DJ. For now, Figueiredo will match up No. 4 Alex Perez.

After a 2018 loss to Benavidez, Perez has reeled off three straight wins - two coming by stoppage. A unanimous decision over Mark De La Rosa led to a triangle choke victory over Jordan Espinoza, leading to a first-round head kick TKO over Jussier Formiga. Plot twist: Formiga is the only man to beat Figueiredo, which is something you can expect to hear about in the buildup to the scrap. While it’ll be a fun fight, we don’t anticipate a high number of pay-per-views being sold.

In the co-main event, flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko makes her fourth title defense against (checks notes) Jennifer Maia. This is pretty much a stay-busy fight for the champ - but at this point all of Shevchenko’s fights are. The champ is so far ahead of her division she’s literally out of credible challengers. Case in point: Maia is getting a title after one-fight win “streak” against JoJo Calderwood. No disrespect to Maia, but there’s pretty much zero chance she can dethrone Shevchenko, who looks like the second best woman in the world behind Amanda Nunes.

Check out the lopsided money lines for the co-main event: Shevchenko is a -1200 favorite with Maia at +658 on the comeback. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Bullet’s line drop even further.

The other big name on this card is a living legend: Shogun Rua. The former light heavyweight champion is still chugging along, but how much does he have left? And what’s keeping him from retiring? At 38 years old, there’s nothing left for him to prove and he’s just looked old in recent fights. Perhaps it’s time for him to follow countryman and fellow legend Anderson Silva into retirement. If Paul Craig lays him out, Dana White might make that choice for him.
