Jimmie Rivera has become something of a forgotten man at 135 pounds. It’s weird saying that about a guy on a 20-fight win streak, with five of those coming inside the UFC. During that time, he’s beaten notable opponents in Pedro Munhoz, Urijah Faber and Thomas Almeida - and he still hasn’t gotten much love as a legitimate title contender.
A former Ring of Combat and CFFC champ, Rivera is looking to add a UFC title to his trophy case.
Perhaps a matchup with Marlon Moraes can speed up his chase. The two have been sniping at each other for a while now, bringing a grudge match to light. Plus, Moraes - the former WSOF champion - got a lot of attention in his last bout when he starched Aljamain Sterling with a vicious knee that was a contender for Knockout of the Year.
The stakes are extremely high here, as an impressive win could cement a shot at the winner of the Dillashaw-Garbrandt title rematch.
We also get another look at Gregor Gillespie, an undefeated lightweight prospect. We all know how hard it is to rise in a loaded 155-pound class, but Gillespie’s exciting style and penchant for finding finishes has made him one to watch. He’ll make a step up in competition against Vinc Pichel, who is 11-1 as a pro fighter.
A four-time All-American wrestler and a former NCAA champion, the 31-year old Gillespie has made a seamless transition to MMA. His top-position grappling and guard passing is already first class, and he’s got natural knockout power to boot. Pichel is a solid fighter but injuries have allowed him to fight just twice in the past four years. His all-around skills should provide a decent test for Gillespie.
No. 14 light heavyweight Gian Villante always seems to be able to force entertaining slugfests. The lumbering big man is a punishing striker who can take a ton of damage, and he should find a willing brawler in Sam Alvey, a veteran with 19 KOs in his 32 victories. Don’t be surprised if you see both of them huffin’, puffin’, and winging punches by the end of the third round.
Women’s flyweight Sijara Eubanks was scheduled to fight Nicco Montano for the inaugural title, but had to withdraw due to a bad weight cut. She’ll now make her promotional debut against Lauren Murphy, who earned a split decision win against former Invicta FC champ Barb Honchak in her debut. We want to see whether Eubanks can be an actual threat to somebody like Valentina Shevchenko.
Also on the card is heavyweight Walt Harris, who is looking to bounce back from a loss to ex-champion Fabricio Werdum. He meets Mark Spitz, who is coming off a TKO win of Anthony Hamilton.
In a matchup of old guys, Jake Ellenberger meets Ben Saunders, and this one could be a lot of fun. Ellenberger is still a slugger at heart, and Saunders is known for pulling off slick finishes on the feet and the mat.
