UFC Fight Night 137: Alvey vs. Nogueira
UFC Fight Night 137 (Sao Paulo) takes place on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the Geraldo Jose de Almeida Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The card airs live on FS1 following the Fight Pass prelims.
It’s not hard to put on a quality card in Brazil. With so many Brazilian fighters in the UFC, you’ve got a treasure chest full of legends, contenders and prospects to fill out an event. UFC Fight Night 137 in Sao Paulo is no different, with a lineup that’s got something for everyone.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, or “Lil’ Nog”, is back after two years on the sidelines. Yes, he’s still fighting at 42 years old. After getting knocked silly by Ryan Bader in November 2016, the little brother of Brazilian legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira meets Sam Alvey, whose always down for a scrap. With 19 KOs in 33 victories, Alvey will test the old man’s chin.
Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira is coming off a huge win over Carlos Condit, and now turns his sights on veteran Neil Magny. Oliveira is one of the more entertaining fighters at 170, with speed, power and slick Muay Thai skills to put the hurt on opponents. Magny is something of a gatekeeper at welterweight, but he does hold impressive wins over Johny Hendricks, Hector Lombard, Erick Silva and Kelvin Gastelum.
Speaking of Hector Lombard, the former Bellator champion will be fighting for his UFC career against Thales Leites. The 40-year old Lombard has fallen off a cliff in recent years, losing five straight with three knockouts, a DQ and a poor UD in that time. He’ll meet another desperate fighter in Leites, who has lost two of his past three.

What to Watch For
While Lil’ Nog never reached the heights his twin brother did, it’s still tough to watch the guy get demolished into his old age. The UFC has put him in a winnable fight in his home country, as Alvey is a middle class talent who has never really sniffed the top 10. Even without any title implications, this one should be a lot of fun, as Alvey doesn’t do anything else but scrap.
Ketlen Vieira is 10-0, with wins over Sara McMann and Cat Zingano in her most recent outings. In a thinning division, it might take only a few more wins to earn a shot at the strap. But first, she’s got to get past 37-year old Tonya Evinger, a former Invicta FC champion whose best know for taking a hellish beating against Cris Cyborg. That wasn’t really a great opportunity to showcase her toughness, and Evinger should fare far better against the Brazilian.
Elizeu Zaleski Dos Santos has quietly won five in a row in a loaded welterweight division, and his matchup against Belal Muhammad signals that it’s time for him to dial up the competition. Muhammad is 14-2 and on a four-fight win streak of his own. Both guys are excellent strikers, setting up a fan-friendly matchup.
Trinaldo vs. Dunham shows just how loaded the lightweight division is. Both men have impressive wins and big fights, and are solid, underrated fighters. Though they may never break the top 10, just treading water at 155 is impressive. Dunham in particular is a bruiser, while Trinaldo throws everything at max power. That’s a good recipe for fireworks.
