Paul Felder comes into this fight on short notice, as he is replacing Islam Makhachev with less than a week’s notice. Makhachev pulled out on Sunday and Felder signed on as the replacement on Monday. Felder is not without a chance on Saturday night. He is coming off a controversial loss to Dan Hooker in February. He lost that fight by split decision and 12 of the 17 media journalists had Felder winning. Felder was originally set to be a color-commentator for the fight between dos Anjos and Makhachev, but now he will be fighting.
RDA is in a 1-4 slump, but here’s who he’s lost to: current champion Kamaru Usman, No. 1 contender Colby Covington, No. 3 Leon Edwards and No. 8 Micheal Chiesa. The one win during that run? Kevin Lee. That’s a murderer’s row of opponents, and all of those dudes are killer wrestlers which must have been hell on a striker like Dos Anjos. What’s worse, he was hammered into fine powder in most of those losses, possibly aging the Braziian beyond his not-so-young 36 years.
But let’s not forget that Dos Anjos is a former champion, and a Muay Thai machine. He entered the UFC as a submission specialist, so he’s a threat in every phase. This fight on Saturday may not last long, as it is hard to see how Felder comes into this bout with any type of cardio training. Fast and hard is really the only chance that Felder has, so this fight should be exciting and quick.
Also on the card is a bantamweight matchup between Louis Smolka and Jose Quinonez. Both men are fighting to get into the top 15, and each bring their own brand of aggression. We’re excited to see some fast and furious exchanges on the feet and the mat in this one.
Women’s strawweight is packed with exciting prospects, and there are a few on this card to keep track of. Let’s start with Kay Hansen, who is just 21 years old and coming off an impressive win in her UFC debut. She already looks like a problem on the mat, which is no surprise considering she trains at 10th planet. Hansen meets UK’s Cory McKenna, who recently earned her UFC shot with a win on DWCS.
