UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Munhoz Betting

UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Munhoz takes place on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card airs live on ESPN starting 6pm ET. In the main event, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (23-8, 7 KOs, 4 SUBs) will make his bantamweight debut against action fighter Pedro Munhoz  (18-4, 4 KOs, 9 SUBs). Also on the card is a light heavyweight tilt between longtime veteran Ovince St. Preux (24-14) and prospect Alonzo Menifield (9-1). The rest of the card is filled with up-and-coming talent, though none figure to make much of a divisional impact. Let’s preview some of the upcoming action.

For years, Frankie Edgar was told he was too small for the lightweight division. He went and won the title anyway, sending a legend in BJ Penn on a long downward spiral in the process. Then he dropped to 145, where folks told him that he should be a bantamweight. After two failed title fights (in an otherwise productive stint), Edgar is finally going to 135.

Is it too late for him? After all, he is 38 years old and the veteran of some hellacious battles. He suffered a first-round KO in his last matchup, courtesy of Korean Zombie. While Edgar might not be cooked, his time as a title contender is likely over. The top of the bantamweight division is loaded with hungry young studs, from champion Petyr Yan to Marlon Moraes to Aljamain Sterling - this is no country for old men with cracking chins and declining speed.

Pedro Munhoz is not an easy first fight for Edgar - the Brazilian is ranked No. 5 in the division. He’s coming off a loss Sterling, but prior to that he was on a run with very good wins over Brett Johns, Bryan Caraway and Cody Garbrandt. He’s been fighting upper echelon bantamweights for the past few years, and he’s a much younger 33. Munhoz’s brand of relentless pressure and dynamic offense is especially dangerous for a guy like Edgar, who tends to get walloped once or twice a fight.

Let’s have a moment of silence for what could’ve been an awesome co-main event between the disgraced-but-dangerous Yoel Romero and inconsistent highlight reel Uriah Hall. The loss of that scrap really takes a lot out of the card. It seems as if the UFC is going to postpone this one instead of finding a replacement for the injured Romero.

That’s not the only loss: it was recently reported that a strawweight fight between Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill was delayed until September 12, due to personal issues. Waterson is one of the division’s more popular fighters, so her absence definitely resonates. Matching her up with the scrappy Hill would’ve produced some really gritty exchanges and some killer standup.

Even the matchup with OSP didn’t come out unscathed. The Knoxville native was originally slated to face undefeated Shamil Gamzatov, but the Dagestani dropped out for unspecified reasons. Now St. Preux fights Alonzo Menifield, who recently had his undefeated record snapped by Devin Clark. This light heavyweight match serves as the co-main event - which is honestly a little weak. OSP is a solid gatekeeper though, so perhaps Menifield comes out of nowhere to become a bright prospect in a division that sorely needs them.
