A bantamweight fight between Rob Font and Cody Garbrandt will headline UFC Fight Night: Font vs. Garbrandt on Saturday, May 22 at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Font is 18-4 in his career with eight knockouts and four submissions. He is 4-1 in his last five fights. He won by TKO against Marlon Moraes in December of last year, won a unanimous decision against Ricky Simon in December of 2019, won a unanimous decision against Sergio Pettis in December of 2018, lost a unanimous decision to Raphael Assuncao in July of 2018 and won by TKO against Thomas Almeida in January of 2018.
Garbrandt is 12-3 in his career with 10 knockouts and two submissions. He is 2-3 in his last five fights. He knocked out Raphael Assuncao in June of last year, lost by TKO to Pedro Munhoz in March of 2019, was knocked out by T.J. Dillashaw in August of 2018, lost by TKO to Dillashaw in November of 2017 and won a unanimous decision against Dominick Cruz in December of 2016.
Font and Garbrandt are ranked in the top five in the bantamweight division so this should be a competitive fight. It is interesting that the odds are moving toward Garbrandt. Font is on a nice run having won three straight, but bettors have been backing Garbrandt with the early money. Garbrandt has faced tougher competition than has Font and that could be why the early money is on Garbrandt.
Another big fight has Xiaonan Yan taking on Carla Esparza. Yan is 13-1 in her career with five knockouts and no submissions. Esparza is 17-6 in her career with three knockouts and four submissions. Yan is a solid favorite in this fight and she could put herself in line for some upcoming marquee matchups if she gets this win against Esparza.
Another key fight has Justin Tafa going against Jared Vanderaa. Tafa is 4-2 in his career with four knockouts and no submissions. Vanderaa is 11-5 with seven knockouts and three submissions. Vanderaa looked good on Dana White’s Contenders Series last season, but he didn’t do much in a second round TKO loss to Sergey Spivak in his debut. Tafa was unbeaten before coming into the UFC, but he is just 1-2 in the UFC.
