While the lightweight division is widely lauded as the UFC’s most loaded weight class, it’s fair to say that 145 puts up a strong argument as well.

Case in point: No. 6 Calvin Kattar meets No. 11 Dan Ige in a headlining matchup on July 15. They might be five spots apart, but their rankings could arguably be reversed and nobody would bat an eye. Ige isn’t a recognized name yet, but the dude has one six straight, taking split decisions over Mirsad Bektic and Edson Barboza in his last two. To put that in context: Ige welcomed one of the lightweight division’s most explosive strikers to featherweight and walked away victorious. Bektic hasn’t lived up to massive expectations, but he’s still a brutally tough opponent for anybody in the division.

Kattar is 5-2 inside the octagon, with his only losses coming against Renato Carneiro and Zabit Magomedsharipov. Carneiro was considered a dark horse contender at the time, while Zabit is currently a legit title contender. Most recently, “The Boston Finisher” lived up to his nickname by KOing Jeremy Stephens - a fighter that’s notoriously difficult to finish. Also on his resume: TKO wins over Ricardo Lamas and Shane Burgos. In just a short time, Kattar has emerged as a problem at 145 pounds.

Here are the guys ranked above Kattar right now: Volkanovski, Holloway, Ortega, Zabit, The Korean Zombie and Yair Rodriguez. Josh Emmett has an argument to join that list. There is no shortage of big name killers the winner of the main event could match up with, and at that level a title shot isn’t far away.

In the co-main event, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar finally makes his move down to bantamweight - where he also joins an extremely crowded division. He’s jumping right into the fray with a contest against the No. 7 Pedro Munhoz. The Answer earned two shots at the featherweight title, but fell short both times. With losses in three of his past four (against Ortega, Holloway and TKZ), Edgar is hoping to jumpstart a flagging career in a lighter weight class.

Munhoz hasn’t fought in over a year, most recently dropping a decision to title contender Aljamain Sterling. But prior to that, the 33-year old had surged up the rankings with three straight wins over Brett Johns, Bryan Caraway and Cody Garbrandt. While he might not be on that elte tier, the Brazilian is an excellent litmus test to see how far Edgar can go at 135 pounds.

Another fight to note: a women’s strawweight fight between Carla Esparza and Marina Rodriguez. Esparza is a gatekeeper to the upper reaches of the division. Rodriguez is undefeated, but hasn’t been particularly impressive in getting that record. However, beating Esparza is something that can’t be ignored. If Rodriguez ever wants to stand out in a stacked division, she has to make a statement here.
