UFC Fight Night: Moraes vs. Sandhagen

Date: Saturday, October 10, 2020

Venue: UFC Fight Island

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

Newly crowned bantamweight champion Petyr Yan will make his first title defense against Aljamain Sterling. The next challenger will be determined by the matchup between Marlon Moraes and Corey Sandhagen - respectively ranked No. 1 and No. 4 at 135 pounds. While we’re on the subject, how stacked is this weight class? Just in the top 10, we’ve got Cody Garbradnt, Pedro Munhoz, Jose Aldo and Jimmie Rivera all scrapping to get into the title conversation.

But back to the matter at hand: Moraes vs. Sandhagen is an all-out banger. If you’re into one-hitter quitters, then Moraes is your guy. He’s notched a few Knockout of the Year contenders already (including one against Sterling). If you like aggressive volume strikers, then you’ll love Sandhagen - no surprises there since he trains with TJ Dillashaw. There’s just no way this fight disappoints.

Also on the card is big Ben Rothwell. Yes, he’s still going at the ripe age of 38. It’s doubtful that he’s got much left, but he has strung together two straight wins, stopping Stefan Struve and split decisioning an upjumped Ovince St. Preux. Standing across from him will be Pland’s Marcin Tybura, who has become something of a forgotten man at heavyweight. After a 1-4 slide where he was knocked out three times, Tybura has back-to-back wins over Sergey Spivak and Maxim Grishin.

We gotta admit, it’d be nice to see Rothwell rise through the ranks again. He was pretty much doing the cringy Cejudo act before Triple C was doing it, and it led to some genuinely funny post-fight interviews and one legendarily bad victory dance. The power might still be there, but he somehow fights even older than his age.

Remember Thomas Almeida? At one point, the Brazilan bantamweight was 19-0 going and one of the hottest prospects in the game. His athleticism and flashy offense was impossible to ignore. Then he got blasted into space by Cody Garbrandt and hasn’t been the same since. His current 1-3 slide includes back-to-back losses to Jimmie Rivera and Rob Font. At 29 years old, Almeida can still has time to evolve, but there are serious doubts whether he can ever become a true player. The UFC is giving him a winnable matchup in Alejandro Perez - perhaps this can be a confidence booster for the AKA rep.

We also like the heavyweight contest between Sergey Spivak and Tom Aspinall. For starters, both guys are young (under 30), and both guys are big. Aspinall is particularly interesting as a 6’5, 265 pound thumper with 7 KOs in 8 career victories. He’s coming off a successful UFC debut where he knocked out Jake Collier.
