San Jose State traveled to Florida and secured the inaugural Cure Bowl victory to gain a spot in the bowl game annals. The Spartans won an initial bowl game for the second time since 2006, also winning the first New Mexico Bowl that year. SJSU wasn’t even bowl-eligible after winning five games in 2015, but due to a lack of teams meeting the criteria, the Spartans qualified due to a high Academic Progress Rate.
The next two games featured the intended conference tie-ins with the Sun Belt flexing its muscles. Arkansas State picked up the second victory in the Cure Bowl, cruising to a 31-13 win over UCF. Georgia State evened its Cure Bowl record and became the first school to make two appearances with a thrilling 27-17 win over Western Kentucky in 2017. Tulane picked up its first-ever Cure Bowl victory, knocking off Louisiana, 41-14, in the 2018 edition, putting up the most points in the history of the bowl game.
Liberty made its bowl debut in 2019, beating Georgia Southern. They showed they were not a one-year wonder, upsetting Coastal Carolina in the 2020 Cure Bowl. The Flames were the first team to appear in consecutive games and are the only multi-game winner of the Cure Bowl. Coastal Carolina was able to get some measure of revenge in 2021, outscoring Northern Illinois to win the Cure Bowl.
In 2022, Troy beat UTSA 18-12 after falling behind 12-0 in the second quarter. UTSA outgained Troy 345-169 but committed five turnovers.
In 2023, Joey Aguilar threw for 197 yards and scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter. Appalachian State beat Miami (Ohio) 13-9 in the rain-soaked Avocados from Mexico Cure Bowl.
