With the demise of the Liberty Flames, the Boise State Broncos have emerged as a key contender for the College Football Playoff from the Group of Five. Boise State is coming off a surprisingly tough home win over the Nevada Wolf Pack and never came close to getting the money. The Broncos also boast one of the elite offenses in college football. This week brings a potential letdown spot and road game against the San Jose State Spartans. San Jose State has been surprisingly good under new head coach Ken Niumatalolo, the former Navy leader.

The No. 12 Boise State football team scored touchdowns on its first two possessions Saturday night against Nevada while forcing back-to-back punts to open the game. The route appeared to be on at Albertsons Stadium. But first-year Nevada head coach Jeff Choate didn’t get the memo.

The Wolf Pack answered right back with a quick-strike touchdown and battled Boise State to the end on the Blue. The Broncos survived, 28-21, to record their seventh straight victory.

Facing loaded boxes all night, Boise State junior running back Ashton Jeanty found a way to run for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries.

Jeanty ripped off one 46-yard run around the left side early in the game, but most of the Heisman Trophy candidate’s damage came on tough runs between the tackles.

After throwing for 307 yards and four touchdowns against San Diego State, Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen had arguably his worst game of the season Saturday.

Madsen completed just 9 of 20 passes for 119 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also had a red zone pick overturned on replay review and threw another interception that was nullified due to pass interference.

The sophomore did make an impact with his legs (eight carries, 58 yards), but Madsen will need to play better down the stretch for Boise State to reach its full potential.

Boise State fired Andy Avalos after ten games last year, but the Broncos rallied under Spencer Danielson to reach the Mountain West title game. The Broncos have a shot at the Group of 5’s playoff spot if they can get production out of the quarterback and navigate a schedule that features Oregon, Washington State, and Oregon State in the non-conference. Running back Ashton Jeanty is among college football's top playmakers, and the defense is deep and talented at all three levels in '24.

At first glance, it is possible that the Broncos could have a 5-star quarterback throwing to a 5-star wide receiver, with a Heisman-level running back leading the run game.

Highly touted USC transfer Malachi Nelson was QB1 during spring practice, but he will still have to win the job from Maddux Madsen in the fall officially. Madsen missed the spring due to injury but will get a chance to run new coordinator Dirk Koetter’s offense in fall camp. Either QB will be thankful to have Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Ashton Jeanty at running back. Jeanty was seventh in the nation at 112.3 rushing yards per game, and he led the nation in yards from scrimmage per game at 159.7. He also scored 19 touchdowns.

Edge Ahmed Hassanein racked up 12.5 sacks last season, good for second in the MWC, and he should again be in line for first-team All-MWC honors. Jayden Virgin-Morgan is another defensive end who coaches expect will contend for league honors.

Kicker Jonah Dalmas has a shot at becoming the NCAA’s all-time leader in field goals, needing 18 to set the record. He has kicked 24, 23, and 26 in the last three seasons, respectively. Punter James Ferguson-Reynolds was second in the nation with a 49.7-yard average.
