Since 2017, Spencer Danielson has been on the coaching staff of the Boise State Broncos. Last year, with a season that was rapidly imploding, Danielson was elevated from defensive coordinator to head coach. A bold and desperate move came in the nick of time. Danielson rallied the Broncos to win the Mountain West Conference championship. Last week, hosting the WMC title rematch with the UNLV Rebels, Boise State dominated to get the win and a College Football Playoff bye in the first round. Danielson has proven to be the right man at the right time for a program that was the first Group of Five national power.

Boise State Broncos Weekly Recap

Last game, the Boise State Broncos won 21-7 against the UNLV Rebels as 4-point home favorites. The game went under the total of 57.5. Boise State has a record of 12-1 straight up, 6-5-1 against the spread, and 7-5 over/under the total. Boise State ranks 6th for total offense, 77th for passing, 6th for rushing and 4th for scoring. Defensively, they rank 62nd overall, 110th against the pass, 24th against the rush, and 36th for points allowed. Also, Boise State ranks 7th for fewest turnovers lost and 107th for takeaways.

Ashton Jeanty ran for 209 yards and a touchdown, and No. 10 Boise State earned a College Football Playoff spot, beating No. 19 UNLV 21-7 for its second straight Mountain West title.

Boise State is all but assured of a first-round bye in the playoffs if it maintains its ranking ahead of the Big 12 winner and finishes as one of the four highest-ranked conference champs.

“In January, when they were playing tug of war on the field with their shirts off, they talked about what they wanted to do this season,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said. “They wanted to win a conference championship and make it to the college playoffs, and they worked for that.”

Jeanty, who had the spotlight to himself to state his Heisman case, didn’t disappoint, ripping off an electrifying 75-yard touchdown run. It was his fifth TD run of 70 yards or more this season, tying LaDainian Tomlinson’s FBS season record.

Jeanty also surpassed 1981 Heisman winner Marcus Allen of Southern California to move into fourth place on the FBS season rushing list and needs 132 more to pass record-holder Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State.

Maddux Madsen threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another score for the Broncos.

UNLV, which entered the game seventh nationally in scoring offense averaging 38.7 points, hadn’t been held below 23 this season.

UNLV coach Barry Odom didn’t mince words when describing his feelings about Boise State, which handed his team two of their three losses.

“Good luck to anyone who comes here and thinks they’re going to win the game,” Odom said. “I think they’re one of the best teams in college football right now. And I think they’ll do a great job representing this conference. They’re built to make a run.”

Boise State fired Andy Avalos after ten games last year, but the Broncos rallied under Spencer Danielson to reach the Mountain West title game. The Broncos have a shot at the Group of 5’s playoff spot if they can get production out of the quarterback and navigate a schedule that features Oregon, Washington State, and Oregon State in the non-conference. Running back Ashton Jeanty is among college football's top playmakers, and the defense is deep and talented at all three levels in '24.

At first glance, it is possible that the Broncos could have a 5-star quarterback throwing to a 5-star wide receiver, with a Heisman-level running back leading the run game.

Highly touted USC transfer Malachi Nelson was QB1 during spring practice, but he will still have to win the job from Maddux Madsen in the fall officially. Madsen missed the spring due to injury but will get a chance to run new coordinator Dirk Koetter’s offense in fall camp. Either QB will be thankful to have Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Ashton Jeanty at running back. Jeanty was seventh in the nation at 112.3 rushing yards per game, and he led the nation in yards from scrimmage per game at 159.7. He also scored 19 touchdowns.

Edge Ahmed Hassanein racked up 12.5 sacks last season, good for second in the MWC, and he should again be in line for first-team All-MWC honors. Jayden Virgin-Morgan is another defensive end who coaches expect will contend for league honors.

Kicker Jonah Dalmas has a shot at becoming the NCAA’s all-time leader in field goals, needing 18 to set the record. He has kicked 24, 23, and 26 in the last three seasons, respectively. Punter James Ferguson-Reynolds was second in the nation with a 49.7-yard average.
