The Kansas Jayhawks and Colorado Buffaloes are on opposite extremes this season. Kansas was picked to contend for the Big 12 championship in the preseason future markets but has flopped in miserable fashion. Colorado was picked to finish near the basement in the Big 12, but instead has been one of the top surprises in college football. KU hosts Colorado on Saturday in a potential trap game for the Buffaloes. Kansas is coming off a stunning and impressive upset road win over the previously undefeated BYU Cougars.

The victory over BYU kept alive hopes of Kansas qualifying for a bowl game for a third consecutive season following a 1-5 start.

BYU totaled 354 yards but went just 2 of 4 in the red zone and came away with no touchdowns on all four drives inside the 20.

Trailing 13-10 entering the fourth quarter, Kansas went ahead on Neal’s 3-yard run.

Daniels quick-kicked on fourth-and-14 when the drive stalled at BYU’s 36. His kick deflected off Evan Johnson’s helmet, and when Jakob Robinson dove to secure it, the ball squirted out of his arms. Quentin Skinner pounced on the loose ball at the 3 to set up the go-ahead score.

“We found a way this time,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said.

It’s been a long time since Kansas experienced a sustained run of success on the football field. The best times for the program were in the 1900s when the Jayhawks produced a 53-9-4 record over a seven-season span, which included a 10-1 season in 1905. That stood as the school’s only double-digit win season for 90 years when the Jayhawks put together a 10-2 season in 1995.

In 1946, George Sauer took over the program after ten straight losing seasons, leading the Jayhawks to a 7-2-1 record. The following season, KU entered the AP rankings for the first time in school history, ending the year No. 12 after falling to Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. It was the first of 12 bowl appearances for the Jayhawks, but Sauer left for another gig after the 8-1-2 campaign, and it would be another 14 years before the next bowl game.

There was intermittent success afterward but nothing sustainable. KU went 9-2 and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the AP poll in 1968, but followed that with a 1-9 campaign in 1969. The 1995 team posted the second 10-win season in history, won the Aloha Bowl, and reached No. 6 in the AP poll. But a 4-7 campaign followed. The greatest season in KU history took place in 2007 when Mangino guided the Jayhawks to a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl win. They were ranked No. 2 during the year, the highest ever achieved by the program. Mangino was let go following the 2009 campaign, and the Jayhawks haven’t fully recovered.

But 4th-year head coach Lance Leipold is restoring Kansas to glory and with a new stadium ready for 2025.
