Louisville Cardinal College Football Betting

The Louisville Cardinals lost three one-score games before their epic road win over the Atlantic Coast Conference-leading Clemson Tigers in a signature win for head coach Jeff Brohm. Louisville proved that it could beat an elite program in its home yard. Now comes another challenging home matchup against the Pitt Panthers, one of the big surprises in college football this year. However, last week saw a disaster befall Brohm and the Cardinals. Louisville snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a bad road loss to the Stanford Cardinal.

Louisville Cardinals Weekly Recap

Last game, the Louisville Cardinals lost 38-35 against the Stanford Cardinal as 21-point road favorites. The game went over the total of 57.5. Louisville has a record of 6-4 straight up, 4-6 against the spread, and 7-3 over/under the total. Louisville ranks 20th for total offense, 15th for passing, 63rd for rushing and 15th for scoring. Defensively they rank 74th overall, 88th against the pass, 59th against the rush, and 73rd for points allowed. Also, Louisville ranks 28th for fewest turnovers lost and 126th for takeaways.

Emmet Kenney made a career-long 52-yard field goal as time expired to give Stanford a 38-35 victory. Down 35-21 in the fourth quarter, Stanford tied it on Emmett Mosley V’s two touchdown passes, the second a 25-yarder from backup quarterback Justin Lamson with 45 seconds left.

After forcing a turnover on downs, Stanford got the ball at its own 45, then benefited from two penalties. Louisville was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after a short swing pass, putting Stanford in position for the field goal.

Kenney, who earlier converted from 41 and 24 yards, lined up for a 57-yard kick, but Louisville’s Quincy Riley was offside. That moved the ball 5 yards closer, and Kenney split the uprights to give Stanford its first win over a Top 25 team since beating No. 3 Oregon in 2021.

It was the second field goal of 50 yards or longer this season for Kenney, who was poised and relaxed when approached by Stanford coach Troy Taylor before the kick.

Ashton Daniels passed for 298 yards and three touchdowns - two to Mosley, who had 13 catches for 168 yards. Louisville’s Tyler Shough passed for 270 yards and a touchdown.

Duke Watson ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns for Louisville. He had a 68-yard scoring run in the third quarter following a blocked punt. Watson, a true freshman, was the Cardinals’ primary running back after Isaac Brown sustained a shoulder injury and was held out in the second half.

“A lot of silly things happened throughout the game that cost us,” Louisville coach Jeff Brohm said.

Nearly all the success enjoyed by the Louisville football program has taken place in the last two decades. Since 1998, the Cardinals have appeared in 16 of the program’s 21 bowl games, and they’ve had just two losing seasons in that span. The Cards have also been a member of four conferences in that stretch but appear to have found a home in the ACC.

The Cardinals made their first bowl game a success by beating Drake in the Sun Bowl following the 1957 season. It would be 13 more seasons before the Cards returned to a bowl and 33 more before they notched another win. The Cards had their first 10-win season and won the Fiesta Bowl in 1999.

Coach John L. Smith started to turn the program into a national powerhouse in the late 1990s and strung together five consecutive winning seasons and bowl games, leaving the club in good shape for Bobby Petrino’s first stint. The Cards won 41 games in four years and earned their highest ranking ever in the AP poll, topping out at No. 3. Following a program record 12 wins and an Orange Bowl victory in 2006, Petrino left for the NFL. Petrino returned in 2014, and the Cards won at least eight games in each of his four seasons. Lamar Jackson won a Heisman Trophy under Petrino in 2016.

After a 2018 collapse, Petrino was fired, and Scott Satterfield could never quite break out. After Satterfield fled to Cincinnati one step ahead of the posse, Louisville found the perfect fit in native son Jeff Brohm.
