2017-NCAAF-UNLV-Rebels-Betting-LinesNCAA Football Betting Online: It’s time for Tony Sanchez to reward the UNLV Rebels for the faith that the program has invested in him. Sanchez has been given a three-year contract extension despite a 7-17 record over his first two seasons in Sin City on the promise of his recruiting potential. That potential may have paid off if freshman Armani Rogers is as good as the program hopes. Rogers is the dual-threat quarterback that Sanchez likes to use in his system and if he can become a competent passer, he could wreak havoc on the Mountain West.

The quarterbacks were some of the most inaccurate in the country last season. UNLV’s three passers combined to complete just 46.9 percent of their passes and weren’t even throwing downfield that often. Two of the three are back but given their struggles last season are unlikely to retake the starting job unless Rogers has some serious problems.

Fortunately, the top two running backs from last season return to provide some stability. Sanchez’ schemes emphasize the run and his offense was able to succeed on the ground against most of the teams they faced. They return four starters from last season to the offensive line, but are going to have a very inexperienced center.

The receivers know their roles but it would help if someone besides Devonte Boyd emerged as a legitimate target. Boyd led the team in every receiving category last season and the second-leading receiver had just 16 receptions. This needs to change.

This defense is going to be bad. UNLV got ground down over the course of last season and only returns two starters from last season. The secondary is a train wreck that doesn’t have any real talent and the linebackers aren’t good either. The Rebels will have to outscore opponents if they want to win games in 2017.

UNLV plays a pretty manageable schedule all things considering. The Rebels are going to get blitzed by Ohio State, but other than that it’s not too much of a stretch to see them be competitive in most games. If everything comes together the right way, this team could go bowling.

This program has been in the gutter for the past 30 seasons. If you want an example that fully shows how snake-bitten this program is, look at 1984.

That season the Rebels went 11-2 with Randall Cunningham under center, but ended up having to forfeit every win because they used quite a few players that were ineligible. Since then, eight games is the most UNLV has won in any season and that only happened one time.

No coach has taken UNLV to more than one bowl game either. That explains why the administration is being so patient with Sanchez despite posting just seven wins. The former coach at Bishop Gorman knows how to get high school kids to play for him and has a feeder system in place with his former school. If he can fully tap that pipeline, this team could reach uncharted territory.
