The 2023 XFL season will conclude with the 2023 XFL Championship game between the Arlington Renegades and the D.C. Defenders on Saturday, May 13 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Renegades finished with a record of 4-6 which was good for second place in the South Division and Arlington upset the Houston Roughnecks to win the South Division Championship. The D.C. Defenders dominated the North Division, going 9-1, and they routed the Seattle Sea Dragons to win the North Division Championship. Saturday’s matchup between Arlington and D.C. has a start time of 8 p.m. Eastern and can be seen on ABC.
The 2023 XFL season will come to a close with Arlington taking on D.C. on Saturday, May 13th in San Antonio. It is definitely an unexpected title game, as Arlington wasn’t supposed to be playing for the title. The Renegades went 4-6 which was good enough for second place in the South Division. They pulled off a big upset last week, defeating the Houston Roughnecks 26-11, a team that had previously defeated them twice during the regular season. D.C., meanwhile, was the XFL's top team from start to finish, dropping just one game during the regular season and they routed the Seattle Sea Dragons in the North Division Championship.
Arlington is all about defense which makes sense considering they are coached by Bob Stoops. That defense limited Houston to just a season-low 11 points. That defense will have its hands full dealing with a powerful rushing attack from D.C. led by Abram Smith who had 741 rushing yards to lead the XFL. The Defenders had a league-high 1,408 rushing yards.
Jordan Ta'amu, the quarterback for D.C., led a potent passing attack and guided his team with 1,894 passing yards during the regular season. He had just three interceptions this season. D.C. was the top scoring team in the league, as they scored 298 points. Their defense wasn’t always the best, giving up 240 points, but it made big plays throughout the season, creating 17 turnovers.
On the other side, Arlington is led by quarterback Luis Perez, who was terrific against the Roughnecks, throwing for 289 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. It was a surprising performance from Perez who had seven interceptions this season. Arlington scored just 146 points in the regular season while giving up 194.
Arlington went just 4-6 ATS during the regular season while D.C. went a league-best 7-3. The Renegades went under the total in 7 of their 10 regular season games, while the Defenders went over in 9 of their 10 regular season games.
D.C. Defenders head coach Reggie Barlow was named the 2023 XFL Coach of the Year. It is no surprise that Barlow won the award, as D.C. led the league in scoring, averaging 29.6 points per game and they led the league in rushing offense, averaging 140.8 yards per game. They were No. 2 in the XFL in total offense (343.2 yards per game). D.C. found a way to win the close games, as they were in seven games decided by one possession and they went 6-1 in those games.
The Alamodome in San Antonio, home of the San Antonio Brahmas will host the XFL Championship. “We are proud to partner with Mayor Nirenberg and the Alamodome to bring our inaugural championship to this great city,” said XFL President Russ Brandon to the media, “San Antonio knows how to host big events and it will be exciting to see the League’s two best teams come together here to celebrate the XFL.”
